Should I have a pet dog?

I really want to get a pet and have decided on a dog. I am currently single, work full time but come home for lunch every day. I have never cared for a dog before and wanted to ask if it is a good idea getting one? My friends have dogs and I love walking them and would like the company. I have a small enclosed garden as well.

I am of the mindset that a dog is a commitment and there will be good times and bad. I do not want to have a dog companion and not be able to give them the life they need if that makes sense. Is there anything I need to be aware of and are dogs suitable for someone who works full time (9 - 5) but does come home every day for an hour between 1pm and 2pm.

I have never looked after a dog so the idea of walking one to start with and "borrowing" one is a very good idea. I work for a very doggy friendly company and we have an "office dog". My initial plan was to pop back for lunch daily and walk my dog but maybe could look at bring him/her to the office. The only issue is that to be based in the office, they would need to be very well behaved and toilet trained of course. I like all the advice, I am not going to do anything until I am 100% sure. Also, would not want a puppy and would want to go for an adult dog from a shelter.

Also rescue dogs time to build a trusting bond with their new owner and that won't happen if you are at work all day.
