Mars Coat-King or Furminator?

My poor double coated dog is suffering in the heat, and has been moulting everywhere for months. I've come across a recommendation to get a Mars Coat-King. When I enquired at P@H yesterday they said they recommend Furminator.

Does anyone have an opinion on which is best before I click Buy Now on Amazon?

Coat king will cut the coat and it will go wavy as it grows back. Furninators are ok but expensive you can get cheap ones on eBay that are petty good. An undercoat rake is fairly good too. However you can get lots of unnder coat out with a slicker brush and a zoom groom. Also if you wash your dog and condition it's coat then rinse and blast with your hair dryer lots of dead coat will come out !

My flatcoated retriever loves his furminator. You do have to clear the hair out of it a lot but it's not exactly difficult or time consuming. I use it on my spaniel too but he doesn't have the same thick undercoat so he just gets a quick going over or he feels like he's missing out

My lab lover her furminator. It's the only thing she'll stand still for.

Thanks Nellie. They do seem similar which was why I was confused about which was best but have taken your comments on board.

Have to say, we were recommended a furminator by our dogs breeder (in retrospect not people to take any recommendation from) so I got one for our double coated large breed dog. Hate it. As does my dog. It seems to rip the fur, certainly gets loads out. Also constantly having to clear the fur off with almost every stroke, so takes forever. I like slicker brushes. Used it on my Afghan about 40 years ago, and now on my current boy. Gets the moulting fur out, but doesn't rip. Don't like the look of the Mars coat king either, as that looks similar to the furminator.

Thanks Basildon. P@H told us not to get an undercoat rake but that's probably because the Furminator was double the price!

My breeder who also does lots of show grooming of dogs for my double coated breed said just use an undercoat rake - anything with blades can damage the guard hairs of the top coat

the undercoat rake works amazingly well

the other thing you can do is take her to a professional groomer and get a really thorough brush-through - we brush ours every few days but he puts up with much more thorough brushing from the groomer so it's a lot more effective!
