SIL cannot sell puppies - What next?

Confusedandazed · 10/07/2014 22:11

Hi, my SIL's dog got pregnant by accident. They own father and another dog. It is a mixed breed - part german shepherd part husky with other breeds thrown into the mix. There are 9 puppies, 3 have sold. But the other six are not budging. Added complication is that they are now 7 weeks old and I know the window of opportunity to sell will be getting smaller as they get older. They are cute pups but very large.

What can she do? Obviously she cannot keep them....

As many have said here, your sister is a complete idiot and is actually a back yard breeder hoping to make a quick buck. Basically, she's trying to sell un-vaccinated, mongrel puppies for £300+ without health checks, probably without a decent worming programme and certainly without giving a shit for the welfare of the pups and where they end up - if she did give a shit, she wouldn't have bred in the first place.

I'm betting that she also bred litters back to back.

She needs to approach reputable rescues and beg them for help (they may not be able to, as they are stuffed to the gunnels with dumped dogs and pups that other back yard morons have bred).

She needs to make sure the puppies are vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped and health checked by a vet, as that will make them more appealing to a rescue. Then she needs to get together a bloody great donation, and give that to the rescue too.

I would suggest that then that when the puppies are gone, the very first thing she does is get ALL the dogs neutered and doesn't get any more entire dogs.

Yes, accidents do happen - I've seen it happen with responsible sheep-dog training & breeding kennels, where there are 25+ entire bitches & dogs, but there is NO excuse for the pregnancy to continue if an accident happens -you visit the vet, take vet advice and get a job to end the pregnancy.

Your sister is a fuckwit.

Breeding a staffy??? Ffs has she ever been to a rescue? :(

Argh. This sort of irresponsible ness drives me mad, my friend is current,y debating breeding her staffy, FFS, are you nuts woman? When she publically posted on fb about it, I gave loads of stats about them being in rescues etc. hers apparently would be different.

ignores asking more detail on Great Dane, such as where, age, etc

So the owner made £1200 from selling the first 3 puppies? That's great. Even after neutering the male she now has £1000 to donate to a responsible rescue to find homes for the remaining puppies. Sorted, no?

Oh dear! We have a dane cross! We love having such a huge dopey dog! Do not tell me where in the country she is. Or if you do make it scotland!!

I hope the backyard breeder does not inflict the dogs on a rescue. They're entirely her responsibility, which she chose when she made her dog get pregnant. If she can't be arsed finding superb homes for every single one, she keeps them, gets them all neutered and slaps herself repeatedly in the gob. Cruel, vile behaviour. The planet does not need more puppies, or humans like this.

Evedallasreid - re the Great Dane , has she tried specific Great Dane groups? A friend of mine has a Dane, and know she has been tempted by other Danes that have been advertised for re homing....she hasn't yet as her existing one is still a baby really. I believe the main forum she is on is on face book.....worth a look?

I do. I dooooo! Poor thing. I hope he finds a home soon. I'd love to take him but not allowed Confused

Possibly area yes. I can't remember exactly what he had but I remember a second visit a week later. Some people did charge 50 tho so I suppose it could easily be a little more by now. Hmm

McBear, I think it depends on area doesn't it? Plus mine had Kennel Cough Vacc too. The Lepto Vacc is now in two parts so that's two visits.

Friend is trying all the large breed rescues at the mo, lovely DBF gave me some names for her to contact. I'm seeing her this weekend so hopefully she'll have some good news - but tbh, not many people want a 4 yr old. Great Dane X :(

Saying that, I'm surey dog was almost 200 to be neutered. Does that sound right?

Buggerbooo, I was going to say the exact same thing. I'd be the one being rehomed after but I'm so tempted to ask...

EveDallas, your vet is a rip off. I paid 40 quid once to get my pooch vaccinated.

OP

Different sized dogs can mate. The larger female usually lies down for the small male.
I have seen 2 Maltipoos - x between a tiny maltese male and a standard poodle female. Both off spring were tiny like the dad.

Also seen an ad for German Shepherd X JR pups.

She must have them all neutered/spayed.

I agree with the PP who said if it was their SIL they'd disown her. Me too. Wholeheartedly. Stupid irresponsible greedy bitch.

You want to know what happens to puppies that can't be sold? Well I am on my way to the pound ( again)this morning to collect one such unwanted pup who would otherwise probably be put to sleep after being dumped by her 'owner'.
Free to good home ads are well known hunting grounds for dog fighters and other morons who want dogs to use for breeding.
Yes, your sister needs to ask for help from a rescue, but she also needs to give them a bloody big donation and not expect them to welcome her with open arms. Rescues here are fed up to the back teeth of dealing with people who try to breed for profit and then can't sort out their mess.
Last year I was at the the pound when 15 black lab puppies were brought in - it was close to Christmas so they had obviously passed the cut off date for selling as 'presents'. That's what happens.
FWIW I have also had the misfortune to know a complete moron who allowed her westie to get her labrador pregnant..
FFS I could go on but I think it's all been said already. Angry

Your SIL is a fucknugget. If she cannot sell then she needs to approach a rescue, but if she does, rather than taking money for pimping out her bitches uterus (bollocks was it an accident) she should GIVE a whole lot of money to the rescue that sorts her shit out for her.

I don't know the actual cost, but if this was my vet it would cost the rescue:
£70 in vaccinations, twice.
£50 for full vet check
£75 castration for males, £125 spaying for females

So over £300 PER PUPPY.

Now I know that a lot of rescues have 'pro bono' vets on the books, but they only get the 'cost' of the vet taken off. Rescue will also be paying to shelter, feed, advertise, home check and transport the puppy.

I have a friend that very sadly is finding it hard to rehome (for genuine and very sad reasons) a much loved, much cared for giant breed dog because the rescues are so full. She's willing to continue to pay for the upkeep of her dog until she is rehomed, but no luck so far. You SIL is adding to this problem across the country thanks to her irresponsibility and greed.

SIL is a complete fucknugget and thanks to her other dogs will probably die. If she were my SIL I'd disown her.

I'm sure I've seen a picture of a JRT/GSD cross which looked like a GSD with really short legs. Competely wrong IMO.

I love GSDs as I grew up with them but love all dogs (and cats!) really, just do not understand back yard breeders at all. All my animals are from charity rehoming centres (except one who was a private re-homing) and the cats are elderly ones who are a little hard to match.

Not really relevant, but recently learned about something called a 'Pomski', probably not correct spelling , but anyway, it's a cross between a Pomeranian and a Husky apparently; now how the bloody hell does that work? Clearly puts OP's SIL's theory that a small dog won't mate with a large bitch out the window.

It might look pretty, but as is the case with so many of these so called designer dogs, no thought has been given to the desirability or otherwise of mixing these two disparate breeds; obviously OP's SIL has put a similar amount of thought into the breeding her dogs.

It's all about the money.

Reputable breeders will usually let pups go to their forever homes at 8 weeks in the UK. That's after they've been wormed loads of times & they can have had their first series of vaccinations & been microchipped.
