No dog is bad its people that make them that way

I know the bastard previous owners of which you speak as i always seem to get free to good home dogs which are free because they've been ruined.

Having never owned a husky but reading on all the forums that most owners don't let them off lead i couldn't have one as i love letting my dogs off :)

I think they are intelligent and highly trainable this is why they are being used by muppets with no brains as 'the new protection/status dog' its a bloody shame as everyone in my dog walking circle of friend have excellently trained happy and very sweet huskies

I think a scheme that you have to attend and pass a suitability test for owning any dog would be a great idea, compulsory, showing ability to care for at the very least basic needs and care/training, and with an 'owner' licence as the end result, having every pup chipped and registered as belonging to which registered owner, with papers not dissimilar to a car log book would be the very best way forward. Breeding would have to be authorised and controlled.
Then there would be NO NEED for that dratted DDA/BSL because if you wanted to own a dog of that type or indeed any considered dangerous due to size or reasons the breed was developed, would have to take a further test to prove they would be capable and responsible, with a criminal record being a total no no. They do it with guns, and licences for anything bigger than a car. Why not dogs.

As usual though it would come down to money and ability to police it :(

I just don't get the aggression angle, we have a lovely Husky girl, and she is the first dog I have ever met that I can virtually guarantee wouldn't bite anyone (unless you are small & furry), please don't tell me this is unusual Sad Having taken in several GSDs with issues bastard previous owners I was looking forward to some "easy" dogs for a few years.

There may be one (or more Grin) Huskies less in rescue soon - we were being talked shouted at to hurry up with her tea last night and DH said the most dangerous words possible in my hearing "we must get more huskies, as I just love the talking" Grin Grin

There is a man at our park with three huskies. He walks them at all once, all under perfect control Shock and [admiration]

I keep hoping to catch him when I am child and dog free so I can beg him to train me to train my dogs to behave as well as his do.

Sadly we are also seeing an increase in the amount of unsuitable husky owners and owners who believe their husky is different and can be let off lead Sad I haven't seen anyone actively train their dog to become aggressive, although the main sport around here is rabbiting, so lurchers etc are the prime choice for muppets.

They certainly do look amazing i know a couple who have two and have invested in scooters so they can 'drive' them.

Unfortunately i also know people are training them to be nasty. They're the 'new' GSD and eventually will end up on the DDL if something isn't done but then i say the same for all dogs :(

I got quite emotional watching this. SpicyDog is an abandoned staffy x breeding bitch. I often wonder what has happened to her pups, who would have been sold indiscriminately, probably as status dogs. If they are anything like her they are lovely lovely dogs and it makes my heart ache to think how things might have turned out for them.

At one point not many moons ago a staffie sold for 3-400 quid now you cant give them away unless they're puppies, seeing a lot of people asking about breeding them still and have to direct them to rescues to see where their puppies have a good chance of ending up.

They take no notice and are selling pups a few months later on.
Makes me Angry

Hmm its huskies and malamutes here too, i wonder why? They're practically unmanageable if not exercised.

Very intelligent dogs..saying that i know a lot are being trained to be nasty.

They are also the top stolen dog at the moment to the poit i worried that it was a fur thing. Obviously its a puppy thing then :(

agree with dooin and was talking to a mum at school about dogs (in general) she was telling me she was at a rescue centre and the amount of staffies was awful. I know Battersea arent taking in any more at the moment. Sad

Yes mrsjay huskies/malamutes seem to be the new'status GSD/Rottie here too. Does my head in.

My friend used to work at Battersea and I recognise some of the people that I have met at Crufts from there. Grin

It is so sad all the rescues have staffies in them such a shame My friend has a rescue he was used for stud and had to have an operation something to do with him over mating , it is huskies here at the moment numpties trying to control a sled dog Last week when the staffie bitch had been left to starve had probab;y stopped producing pups so she was dumped,

Staffies are lovely, lovely dogs, but as puppies they are very bouncy and hard going. They need someone with a lot of experience and time and patience to train them good manners. An untrained staffy will not "turn" as many people believe but they will remain to be extremely bouncy, jumpy and will most likely chew things.

People take them on without realising what they are letting themselves in for.

Then there is the other side of the coin, where the numpties buy a "savage" dog who they then realise is actually nothing more than a four stone lap dog and is more likely to love a burglar to death than he is to savage to them to death and so they move on to their next "savage" dog Sad

There are the other numpties who breed and breed and breed without a second thought as to where the pups will end up.

A side effect of so many of them ending up in rescue (in part, simply because of over breeding meaning there are too many of them on the whole) is that people who would be the right kind of home wrongly assume that there must be something wrong with them.

Add to that to the media's unfair portrayal of them and it's a nasty, vicous, circle where the only victim is the most loyal breed of dog you could have the pleasure of meeting.

It's all very sad and I do hope Paul OGrady covers it in this show somewhat to try and help minimise all the bad press.

and i Sad at the ammount of staffies in rescues I don't understand it, is it people getting bored of status dog then moving onto something else, I just don't 'get it '

Hmmm, so do I!
How can anyone not open their eyes and heart to one of those dear rescue dogs? I was in tears too over Bourbon. Seeing her spine and those pressure sores, so sad, she was dumped heavily pregnant with 5 pups, what sort of arsewipe does that? And to think without intervention, Bourbon and her pups would have died. Awful.
Such a shame that so many people would much rather pay an extortionate amount of money for a pup rather than adopt a rescue dog/pup. Unfortunately all the time the demand is there with the paying customers, dogs will be bred regardless and rescue's will remain overcrowded with some healthy dogs being euthanased for the simple fact that there is no room in the rescue centre.
Paul OGrady is fantastic! Loved the ending with the cardboard box hiding that cute dog. Long may he continue to raise awareness.
