Me and DH (well, Dh nearly agrees.....I'm working on it!!) would love to get a puppy for DD (nearly 10)
We already have a choc lab that we got as a rescue when she was 2 1/2. She's such a lovely dog, but just too much of a handful for DD to walk, etc.
We'd like a puppy, mainly because we've not done it before, and I think that DD and puppy and the whole family would really benefit from it.
The type of dog we want is -
small enough for DD to handle, but not too small.
very trainable
doesn't drop a load of coat every time it walks in the house
doesn't need hours and hours of exercise every day, but that can go for several hours if required
Has anybody got any ideas?
TIA

Well personally I think a dog like a border terrier would fit your family. They are amiable little dogs, will easily keep up with a Labrador and a family, intelligent and great to train, will love to play and happy to sleep in a garage. Coat will need stripping but not much grooming or shedding, obviously all dogs are individuals' and iv seen aggression in the most unlikely breeds of dogs. That said iv never had any aggression at all in my dogs and I have terriers - and rescue ones at that! So much of it is how you bring the pup up.

Some of the popular crossbreeds like cockerpoos (cocker spaniel x poodle) are proving good family pets, but again all are different. Although not as reliable with things like coat care, you often cant beat a cross breed for temperament and health.

Most important thing is if getting a puppy, choose a reputable breeder where you can spend time with the litter and see what the bitches temprement is like and you will also get an idea of the pups individual temperaments.

Good luck and enjoy!
