Dog pooing in crate

Sorry if this is long.. Our rescue dog who we have had for last 6 weeks and has been happy in his crate at night apart from the first night when he was barking, we ignored it as we were told to, but when we came down in the night he had pooed in it. I ceaned it up, no problem there. The next few nights when he barked, i told him 'NO' and as soon as he was quiet i would say 'quiet good boy', i may have had to do this for about 20 min the first night then for a few mins the next few nights, and it then stopped.

However last night, my daughter put him to bed quite happy. After been let out to do is wee before bed, he quite happily hopped back in doors and went straight into his crate and settled down to sleep. She shut the door, put out the lights and went to bed. After a couple of minutes he started to bark, and she ignored it, as I had told her to do, he barked for about 10 minutes then stopped. When we arrived home about 15 minutes later, I briefly checked on him as I thought I wold take him for a quick round the block walk, and discovered he had dirtied his crate. Do you think that because he was left barking that he pooed, or because he pooed that is why he was barking? Do you think if she had done what I did the first few nights saying 'no' then 'quiet' that we could have avoided this accident. Thanks.

Only advice I can give, having had several create trained digs is when he goes out for final wee leave him a little Longer and he will prob have a poo, outside. My dog needs about 15-20 mins outside to find his "spot" and does what we call his "poo dance" for a bit in the chosen spot before he goes. Always reward outdoor poo with cuddles and treats etc. 6 weeks is not long with a rescue, it will get better & routine is the key. :-)

Thanks hamptonmummy, the thing is that he just wants to come back in as soon as his wee is done. Even when we take him for a walk before bed, he has never pooed. He tends to do two in the evening on his 6.30/7.00pm walk. You are of course right that 6 weeks is really soon. I just wondered did the barking cause the poo, or did the poo cause the barking, if you know what I mean.

It's hard to tell, was he used to the create before you had him and do you know much about his history. Also is it hard or soft and different to normal poo, soft would point toward upset tummy or fear, It maybe he's not got used to the create, does he go in during day or maybe he is feeling a bit insecure in it at night and in the dark, when create training a new dog I have always put a toy in and a few biscuits and close the door and leave room for a bit then increase time you leave them till there not bothered, alternatively try taking Create upstairs in your room for a few nights, move to landing with your door open so he can see you eventually back to kitchen with lights out I did this with one pup, don't lose heart you will get there with it last weekend we had a family emergency and ours was left for 13 hours with no problems. Although I'd never normally leave that long by choice. X

persivere. i have a pup and right now he wees sometimes in his crate but has never pooed though throughout all the dogs i have took in, i have dealt with this. you need a routine in place. let out 1st thing for wee and poo (just shut the door and leave him out in the garden) until he does both, even if he whines he will eventually give in. then feed breakfast. do the same after lunch and dinner so you know its out. plus let him out every 30 minutes (i know its drastic) but believe me toilet training to outside from young really pays off. yes it can be exhausting but hey you got a puppy! lol keep tp the routine. if you find that hes pooed in the house theres no point in telling him off unless you catch him in the act beause they dont really register it. if you do catch him in the act make some sort of loud noise like a clapping or your voice to startle him then put him outside so he can register the beaviour as bad and outside as 'where im supposed to do it' if you follow through with everything and still at the end of the night you find him pooing in the crate then leave him because hes just doing it out of attention. leave him to whine then when he stops, go clean the crate and him but dont say a word to him, ignore him, dont stroke, nothing. because you dont want him to think that you come running every time he fouls. i hope some of this helps. ive dealt with it on a few occasions. and trust perceverance pays off, i have 4 dogs to proove it! x

Thank you for all the advice. On his last night time walk since this incident he has done a poo, during this walk it was always just a wee, so maybe his tummy has just changed for a bit. This walk is 10.30/11.00pm. He has done 3 already today, all normal, so we will wait and see.

He does like his crate, he sleeps in there during the day without encouragement or coaxing. I hope it was just a blip.
