The doghouse

do I need to worry about my (nearly) 9 week old puppy?

I have a german short-haired pointer puppy. He bounces like a nutter for two hours in the morning and then the rest of the day is relatively sedate. He has moment of energy but otherwise seems to like to rest in his basket. Is this normal? The vet said he was of good health when she did his new puppy check but if you want to do something with him, like go in the garden, he, as often as not, lifts his head, looks at me quizzically and go backs to sleep. People who meet him talk about how calm he is and I am now starting to wonder if I need to be concerned??

Our nine month pup can still sleep anything up to 20 hours per day especially if he has been to the beach for a run around. Other days it's a bit less.

When I got my puppy I was also worried about her sleeping all the time. I had no idea puppies slept so much. Think I read 21 out of 24 hrs is normal for a very young puppy. My puppy is now a very chilled out 2 yr old dog (who still likes her sleep though!) so maybe yours will be too!

He is solid liver colour, yesbutnobut. Thanks everyone, I feel reassured now that this oukd be within the parameters of normal!

Calm is good for a puppy! Like children the more they get wound up, the worse they behave so I'd be keen to keep your pup as he is. Play followed by rest is fabulous and bodes really, really well for his puppyhood.

And he's still a proper baby and no doubt is more than a little shell shocked by the huge change he's just had. Was he bred in a kennel or home?

We have a nearly 9 week old lab, and he is very sleepy still. Happy to sleep when we let him. The breeder said that this would be the case, but he has bursts of energy throughout the day - although nothing as long as two hours. I wonder if it might be worth keeping the 'bouncing' down to half an hour sessions, but spread four throughout the day?

It's like having a baby again, isn't it?! Smile

Shouty, they are stunning dogs - what colour is yours?

Did you choose your pup from a litter and, if so, did you receive any guidance from the breeder about temperament? It may be you've landed a super chilled pup? With my soon to arrive pup, I was able to choose and expressed a strong preference not to have either the 'top dog' or a submissive dog but something in between.

Has he just had his jabs? He may be feeling a bit out of sorts after that. I would have thought though that if your pup is eating well and is otherwise in good health, he is probably just getting used to being on his own - he is very young after all and has just left his mum and litter mates. Sounds like you're doing everything you should.
