we have a 3yo de-knackered JRT/westie dog. he has calmed down a lot, but is still rather excitable. we have just moved to a small village with a larger garden, surrounded by fields. dh and I are talking about getting another pup. not a big one, but maybe a beagle or spaniel. Ive spotted a cocker/lab cross for sale near us and am trying to win dh round to getting one sooner rather than later.

first, should we get a bitch or another dog? my instinct tells me a bitch would be better, but not sure.

secondly, should we take Benji with us to view and until he/she is ready to take home take him a few times to get them used to each other?

i am welsh and grew up in rural wales - i would never ever buy a pup/dog from a farmer or a local ad. i have seen first hand the cruelty that happens behind the scene in so called accidental mating and amateur breeding.

even if you dont care about the aspect of supporting puppy farming and backyard breeders i would recommend you thought about the potential cost and heartache to your family of having one of these 'designer' breeds

as a poster above said if you want a non rescue dog then you should expect to spend a few months researching reputable breeders. or if you want a rescue dog then considering dog may be with you for the next 15 years waiting till the right dog comes up in rescue and travelling to see dog is worth it

our older jrt was 8 yrs old when we decided to rehome another dog. she was and is very bossy and thinks she is the only jrt in the world! we rehomed our second dog from dogs trust evesham and they matched us with a submissive dog. i especially felt that i wanted her to feel her place in the home wasnt being challenged as she was and is an amazing dog. this was 6yrs ago and i have no regrets. we have had great back up from the dogs trust. they give free behavioural advice if needed at any point during the dogs life. they were very knowledgeable in matching us with the best dog for us.

btw having a pup is no guarantee that the dogs will get on. our third dog we had as a pup and he and dog no 1 dont get on very well!

thank you, I am far, far keener on the rescue route now than I was before. as I said, I dont want a designer dog. or a pedigree etc. tbh, the main reason I was looking at ads was because I wanted a family pet above else iykwim.

Lissie, Bluebell is only 12 inches to the shoulder, and six months old. Her story would melt a heart of stone. She is good with dogs, cats and kids. What more do you want?

I know. She is adorable - wish we could take her here, but already have three.

Good thing, dogs are very good for emergency cuddles. Smile

got a link for gordon and oval?

Report
OracleInaCoracle · 10/07/2011 23:10

I cant link to specific dogs, but heres the site. they are about halfway down, both in wales. oval is a 4yo bassett bitch and gordon is a 2yo beagle dog. both ex-breeders.

I loved all the dogs, and the pups are very cute, but I would like to give an older dog a chance.

Can I put in a word for greyhounds and Lurchers? They might look big, but they don't take up much room. Ours has just curled up on less one third of our sofa with DH. She can't have had more than 6 inches of sofa and she is regularly found asleep on the cat's cushion Grin

Dooin, the link I posted is of a lurcher. She is titchy, a real little cutie. (Wanted to say she is a dwt of a thing, but only Welsh people would understand Blush).

Lissie, I believe MT have a network of foster drivers/transporters (most rescues do and help each other out all the time with moving dogs around). If this was the only barrier, it would probably be surmountable.

Would also add that while greys can curl up neatly, they only do this to lull you into a false sense of security, and before you know it, they have done their stealth maneouvre (sp?) and you have a giant paw in your kidney, the grey has stretched out to a length of somewhere around 9 ft, is farting contentedly without a care in the world and you have no room on the sofa, and cannot move because of the huge creature now sprawled all over you (doing a chemical warfare experiment via their bottom , and using their tail to knock your cross stitch all over the place... mutter, mutter....)

Of course, a cute lurcher like Bluebell would never do such a thing. [hwink]

ooooo scuttle, really?

dooin, they are gorgeous dogs, but I have too many health issues and fragile bones to be able to sit under such a large dog Grin when I was younger, the family I loved with had a rottweiler. a huge bear of a thing who would sit on my lap for some cwtches. she was gorgeous!

scuttle, the great dane in your link is adorable!

That sounds like my Rottie - great big bear-like beast who loves nothing more than snuggling on the sofa as much in my lap as he can get. Would not be great with the health issues you mention though, he's gentle but gets somewhat clumsy when a bit over-excited and tends to barge past me or headbutt me accidentally.

Greys are generally very gentle, but obviously quite big - small lurcher is a good idea, or what about a whippet?

Go on Lissie, give 'em a call. What's the worse that can happen? And "cwtch" has to be one of the most useful words ever. Even my DH (who's English) has adopted it with enthusiasm. He still can't get over my pronounciation of "tooth" though. [hgrin]

And am liking the sound of the "family I loved with" [hwink] - hope it wasn't too Biblical?!!

"Tuh-th" to rhyme with the first 3 letters of "woof", ScuttleButter? :o

lived with, lived with! Blush

epiphany, buffy and helga were the same. gorgeous big bears. rubbish guard dogs though.

we go on holiday in 3 weeks, for 10 days so we really need to wait til then. that will also give us chance to spruce up the garden and make sure its secure ready for any home visits. Benji is pretty good, but a new dog is a different thing altogether.

having said that, I really, really want Gordon!

DBF - Yes!! He also gets confused when I say "sospan" instead of "saucepan" and various other variations - hours of fun!!
