NotCod, my husband can barely read. That's how bad his dyslexia and dysgraphia are.

It is NO excuse.

He managed to pass the theory test (with a reader) and the advanced theory test (again witha reader) and driving tests, has a clean driving record, to get 5 standard grades, hold down a job.

And cook a decent meal for his family and himself.

He watched the show and remarked, 'These people just use every excuse in the book and give up because they'd rather be lazy.'

Well, sorry, it sounds harsh, but it's a fair point.

Yes, it's hard to change a lifetime's habits and bad upbringing and all that.

But it's not impossible.

I don't enjoy a lot of what motherhood entails...
Packing school bags every bloody morning
Getting everyone sorted by 8
Washing sodden bedclothes

As you say though, we dpo it.

Good point TM.
It's yer bloody duty as a parent to feed your children wel..

I have to comment on one of the earlier points raised on this thread. If you don't enjoy cooking why on earth is that an excuse not to bother? Especially if you have a family to look after! FGS! I don't particularly enjoy cooking and I don't particularly enjoy eating. But as parents every one of us has a duty to provide nutritious food for our children and to keep ourselves fit and healthy by eating healthily ourselves. Unless you can afford a cook, that means cooking yourself. So what if it's boring? Tough shit. These people need a good slap. GRRRR.

This programme has me fuming! I can't believe a mum could feed her DC's kebabs and crap EVERY night.

I mean a ready meal would be better than that FFS, and I never thought I'd ever say that!

don't like tomatoes with tuna

but agree pasta bakes much easier/more logical for families

zippitippitoes · 30/09/2008 22:06

ok now in supermarkets it is really helpful because they have prices per kilo on labels

so you might not get the greatest dood but today the cheaopest maturte cheddar was grated in tesco

so thats what i bopught

not probably the tastiest when i had mioney i would have bopught something else but i have had all the experiences wrt what you can afford

I think that he should have taught them how to cook a blardy tuna pasta bake.
tin of tomatoes 25p
tuna 50p
some peppers 40p
onions 20p
pasta 50p
some cheese 20p

It wouldn't be my choice but it is really really cheap and would be an option if you have spent all your money on drugs fags and takeaways.

If they've never been taught any different, maybe they do?

I mean, is it fair to say the woman in question has probably not had the most well-rounded up-bringing?

It's hard to change lifetime habits. I'd imagine it knocks your self-confidence and self-belief too.

You know, I work, I have bills to pay - we still eat properly most of the time. Yup, we have the odd takeaway but it's very much an exception.

Oh, and I gave up smoking when it got to the point that I couldn't afford to do it an more.

My mum cooked everything from scratch when I was growing up. 90% of our meals would consist of a home made dinner followed by a homemade pudding.
My dad grew lots of different fruit and veg and my mum made sure none went to waste. We spent many sundays picking blackberries, strawberries etc for my mum to cook with.
My dad got hold of rabbits, pheasants and prepared them for my mum to cook.

However she never taught me or my siblings how to cook. She is now too ill to show us. I moved out of home at 25 without knowing how to cook a thing from scratch.
Me and dp survived many years on sauces out of jars and takeaways. We both worked full time with overtime and neiter of us knew how to cook good food quickly.

It is only since the birth of dd that I became intrested in nutrition, esp. since I started weaning her.
I am a complete beginner in the kitchen but I can honestly say she eats a very healthy diet. I have learnt so much about food since I began cooking for her. I have most importantly learnt that I do enjoy cooking from scratch.

However me and dp still fall back on takeaways sometimes, although with money so tight we really shouldnt. And it is a bad habit we are trying to break.

I can completly understand why some people in this day and age dont cook.

'i'm knackered when i get home from work.'

god, i've never run into more people with more excuses.

so instead i'll just feed my kids nowt but shite and fuck up their health.

get a slow cooker then. put it together the night before. plug it in before you leave. come home. do pasta.

it's not hard.

it's cheaper than takeaways and ready meals and such.

one night a week, spuds night. jacket potatoes. tin of baked beans. sprinkle grated cheese and grill till melted.

perfectly decent meal.

i don't know why jamie bothers except that he's getting paid for it.

I remember that we didn't have much money when we were kids but my mum always put decent food on the table, can't remember ever having a takeaway. When money was really tight we would have boiled eggs.
