Bake Off will not be on the BBC in future

The meeting between Love Productions and the BBC has resulted in Bake Off leaving the BBC due to the BBC not offering enough money to keep it! Where will it go and will it be the same?

Mel and Sue swearing all over footage of contestants crying is well documented. I love them for that.

Maybe Empress Unless they manage to get nice simpatico presenters to replace M & S. It would be worth their while IMO. I heard Susan Calman on R4 today absolutely panning the sale of of GBBO (she loves it) and saying she would never take the place of M&S Grin

I read somewhere that in early episodes the producers were trying to raise tension & get contestants in tears, until Mel & Sue kicked off about it.

Apparently now if any contestants start crying, Mel or Sue will either put their coats over them or stand close by and start swearing to make the content unusable.

So there's one obvious likely change.

I blame Paul H. I bet Mary didn't agree with him about them.

Yes I agree Memoires What were those weird white, steamed round doughnut type things from Germany meant to be FGS?

Also isn't a pancake fried not baked????

I was hoping that after this series, instead of trying to find new and stranger things to make them do, they would go back to basics.

It's an effing shame. But let's face it Mel & Sue were peeed off with it anyway, so it'a a good excuse to leave isn't it?

I'll still watch it but record it so I can whizz through the advert breaks (unless it gets too awful!).

raisedbyguineapigs thanks for explaining that, it makes sense. Blush I forgot about advertising revenue!

Davros I think if people advertise with C4, they would pay a premium to be in the Bakeoff ad slots. Also, they can get money through sponsorship and product placement, which the BBC can't do. They would also be able to advertise any Bakeoff merchandise on the show which the BBC cant do. It won't be the same at all, but it makes commercial sense in a way Sad

I agree it's just going to go the same way as Top Gear.

The production company have been ridiculously greedy and stupid - it probably could have run another 5 series on BBC, but I bet it'll only run for one on Ch4 before it tanks.

Agree with SwedishEdith, they have a winning formula and the production company will pay for their greed. Yes bring on Bake On and keep the format. I am sure there is another production company happy to take it on. Channel 4 will have bought a dead duck.

Or maybe it really is the end Sad

Ffs why tamper with something great that doesn't need fixing?!
Oh yeah....money

Do you think it's just a case of it being early days and things will, in the end, settle down nicely?
That the fab four will move across with the show and GBBO will be okay?
Leaving us with our beloved show as it as with just the adverts to contend with.
I can manage that, considering the alternatives Confused.
I can't wrap my head around other possibilities.
Here's hoping they all stay. Please make it so.

I love Miles Jupp, he is a superb presenter.
But let's face it - with such huge audiences you can bet that every would-be and has-been presenter is onto their agent this morning screaming GET ME ON BAKE OFF

Interesting, makes sense I suppose but they are paying a huge amount for it so, even if it's a hit in viewer numbers will it be a hit financially?

Radio 2 not radio 4

Report
raisedbyguineapigs · 14/09/2016 08:27

Richard Osman was just talking about this on Radio 4 and actually made sense of it. He said that it probably had a couple of series of 15 million on the BBC then would be cancelled once viewing figures dropped, but it would probably start off at about 3 or 4 mill on C4 and be their biggest hit by some way, so could go for another 10 years. It will probably be a bit more Channel 4 so I doubt I'll be one of the 3 million, but they can lose 3/4 of their audience and still be a huge hit. They may gain some by being more edgy etc.

What about chefs/cooks? Both channels cannot have Berry and Hollywood.

Yes, I know Susan Calman - that was a bit of a 'duh' moment for me!

Davros · 13/09/2016 23:39

I don't like Susan Calman so that's the end of her career then!

raisedbyguineapigs · 13/09/2016 22:48

Susan Calman is the Scottish Comedian. She does loads of BBC stuff though. Doesn't she have a daytime quiz show, and also does a lot of Radio 4.

Miles is good. I don't think I know Susan Cayman.

I would be happy to see Miles Jupp presenting and I like Susan Cayman too.

Maybe Harry Eastwood as a judge?

Or Monica? I like that woman who won MasterChef, the one with the granddad, too.

Who would you have as presenters at Channel 4? And if the BBC made its own version, and they couldn't have Berry and Hollywood? We were toying with the idea of HFW (noooooo!), Delia, Ramsay (Ch 4, def not Beeb), that girl who used to be a model, and maybe a new face like Tim Maddams (?is that his name?).
