Have just started watching and am already shaking my head in disbelief a lot!! Shock

What is wrong with these women? How could you hand your baby over? And wouldn't health visitors etc have concerns about that set up?

Am very Sad but the little girl.

I love Ellie and her sister. I wish they could go to school - nowt wrong with homeschooling at all, but they want to go so much and I cant stand the way he talks about them becoming hard and vicious. DD is 10 and at school and isn't hardened or vicious.

Their father doesn't deserve them. I cant believe that his jealousy led to margot being removed from position of mum.So he had to break that bond in order to form the bond with ellie himself? Arsehole.

Initially he seemed charming. I think it's an act. I think he is selfish and manipulative. Ironically, he described the absent 'wife' as selfish. Bit of projection there.

All revolves around him. Childhood dream to have horses and train. Walter Mitty.

why do the women live with it? i can see the attraction for him but what is it for the women? he seems mean, he doesn't provide financially what has he got?

She inherited a hatred of men from her mother so had to be 'given' to someone else?

That man has all the makings of a cult leader right there.

People dreamt he was a king so he had to fulfil the prophecy? Scary stuff.

I like the women and the children are lovely.

I'd love to see them set up home together, sans the cultish dickhead.

I have no idea nancy, it would be my idea of hell, but presumably the women liked the communal living side enough to overcome the problems.

They aren't legally married to him other then his first wife.

Report
ariadneoliver · 20/06/2013 22:02

He's probably only legally married to his first wife and the rest have gone through a ceremonial marriage only, so legally just cohabiting.

Yes, they said the others have taken his name and wear a ring but not sure on the ceremony side of things.

Just seen another wife has left.

Not surprised at all.

Thank you to all that explained the messianic Jewish thing, although i understand it i just don't get it !

At some point they did say that only one of the women were legally married, the rest had just changed their names

He sickened me, those poor little girls. I was literally shouting at the TV.

He quite possibly has not come out of this the way he hoped to in this program.
I hope his children do get to experience the wider world [school] as they so clearly want to. Ellie [hope got name right] is an intelligent, kind girl who I hope does not get indoctrinated. She clearly loves her Dad and talks sensitively about all her Mums. Difficult to see how this will pan out....

I used to know them, before they moved to the farm. The ladies are indeed lovely (if downtrodden). He is a pig but knows how to turn on the charm when it suits him. I'm glad some of them are starting to see the light!

I agree with most posters. The bloke is weird and I too think he is controlling (he is trying hard to come over as Mr Nice Guy) but he gave me the creeps. Ellie is a star and obviously worships her "daddy" - but this business of "giving her" to Judith as a baby was horrendous, and the poor birth mum is defending it to Ellie and saying how much "Jude" gave Ellie.

All the women looked a bit stressed I thought, and somehow "worn down" whereas he looked fit as a flea. Very selfish (and ridiculous reasons) why he won't let Ellie and Abbie go to school when they were so excited at the prospect. Wonder why one of the wives couldn't speak up for the 2 young girls. Was Judith (the "adoptive" mother of Ellie) still in the house, as I didn't think she was. Poor Margot. She seemed like she had to "hold back" from loving her own daughter, as though it wasn't allowed somehow.

Report
MerryMarigold · 21/06/2013 10:29

I was very intrigued when Judith said she would move to New Zealand if Margot took 'the girls' there (I wonder which others were hers). I think Judith loves the kids more than the Rabbi when it comes down to it. I also think she's done a great job with those kids, clearly loves them as her own. In some ways the many mothers thing works, just like a community brings up children, they seem so well rounded.

Who knows what will happen to them in Crete Hmm. Ellie is a survivor though, and a leader. And has some great women around her. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'witchcraft' of man-hating is passed on to her though, and nothing to do with any of her mothers, but the man she adores who is living is his dream through them. She'll realise that one day, she's a sharp girl.

PointeShoes · 21/06/2013 10:34

I thought it was shockingly obvious that the ladies were being abused. I wouldn't trust that man at all. Seriously think ss should get involved, some serious warning signs jumped out when Ellie said something along the lines of ' the descions that daddy makes are always for the good of the family / the best , even if they are wrong, he is the the head of the family like Jesus.'
Very upsetting about ellie not even knowing who her birth mother was until she was that age. Awful

Did anyone else notice that the children (when we saw them briefly) seemed relatively young (some under 5's) yet most of the women looked far too old to be their mothers, so where were the mothers? Oh god it's just awful..........poor down trodden Margot. I reckon there is a hierarchy with the "wives" - think he chose who was going on TV. I suspect they are going to Crete because the programme will have raised people's curiosity which they won't want, but maybe they do, as they (HE) agreed to make the programme. Think money was at the root of that because if they were getting £1000 for the slot on morning TV, they must have got a lot for the programme.
