I absolutely loved this - thought it was one of the best things I've seen on TV for a long time.

Really good, but subtle and underplayed, performances.

Thought Rachel Evan Wood as the older Veda was superb

I watched every week but was really disappointed with it. It just felt so flat, and in my opinion didn't really go anywhere, I kept waiting and waiting.

Normally I love Kate Winslett too, but is it me or was she just not very good in this? Everything about her/Mildred really grated on me.

This has actually put me off reading the book I would be really frustrated if it plodded along like the TV show and some people have said it's stuck quite close to the book, but I really couldn't get into any of the characters.

Yes, that's EXACTLY how it felt to me too limited

I kept waiting for the 'big shocker' but was disappointed that it was her dd in bed with Guy Pearce as that had already been shown in a trailer so massive let down in my opinion!

It was very limp. Does the book end in that kind of, 'oh, never mind' kind of way? Never saw the film.

Oh I hope it is good. I have recorded the lot and am going to watch 'em all one weekend soon.

I love KW, and I loved the Joan Crawford film (not read the book however).

I have read very good reviews elsewhere. Mind you I loathed Boardwalk Empire, all style no substance.

Oh I LOVE this and I also love Boardwalk Empire - maybe its because I never read the books.

I have been watching this and I agree, utterly soulless! Which is a crying shame.

I haven't read the book and I am going to as I have a feeling the book will go to explaining her character in more detail hopefully.

My questions are -

  • I'm not sure wether I am supposed to admire Mildred for being a business woman or loathe her for failing so spectacularly with her kids, does the book make her a more likeable character?

  • The night she up sticks and goes off with gorgeous Guy Pearce is so confusing. Why would she just leave her kids? Is she at all guilty in the book? In the series it just seems a bit "Oh well, went off for a shag, came back and daughter is dead, let's get the restaurant open" SO unbelievable.

  • WHY is the eldest daughter such a brat is Mildred is pretty down to earth - is there any back ground story there?

  • Did she just shag first bloke - husband's friend to get back at husband/further her career plans and how does she get away with it? Surely back then she would be seen as a bit fast and loose, or not?

Sorry for all the questions - am definitely going to read the book!

KW is dire in this and I find myself drawn to her top lip and how dark it is - the make up artist should be shot and introduce Kate to some Immac.

Saying all that though, I am GLUED to it every Saturday night - next one is the last one isn't it?

Exactly like Boardwalk Empire - should have been so good, but just felt soulless.

I agree - the film was so good, that any 5 part imitation was always going to fall short. I went back and read the book yesterday just to make sure it was as good as I've always thought!

I sound like I'm on commission for the original . . .

I don't have sky but have seen this advertised. I am intrigued because the film with Joan Crawford is one of my all time favourites. You'd have to go some to beat that. Why did they make it a series and not a film I wonder?

Not read the book but will make the effort.

Like Boardwalk Empire? I know what you mean. I must admit, the only things I seem to watch on there are the oldies.

Hate it. One of my most favourite books of all time, but this is awful. No life to it, no spark. Kate Winslet totally wrong for the part. Must have read the book a dozen times, and it always offers more, yet this has no soul. Seeing a pattern with big Sky Atlantic things - they look great, but they're empty.

I really like Kate Winslet, but I'm finding the acting in this a bit iffy.

I sky plussed each of the episodes and just finished watching them yesterday, absolutely loved them. Was very shocked by the ending though, not at all what I expected. Hope there will be another series.
