What time is your 14 year old allowed out 'til on a school night?

My DS reckons boys his age are allowed to stay at the skateboard park until 10. Apparently he's conspicuous as the boy with Victorian parents who make him come home at 8pm.

My dd1 who is 13, is allowed out until 9-10ish. I made it clear that within that time she has to shower (if needed) & eat (sometimes she eats whilst out). Also I know where she is or where she is heading to & who she is with. Also, I told her that if I get a phone call from school about her not doing her homework then I will have to start checking up on her, so our little deal works.

My ds is 15. on school nights, he has to do his homework and eat dinner with us. After that, if all homework is done, then he can stay out til 10. Later if it's a weekend.

Straight home from school and only late home if its the once a week sports training which involves coming home by 9 max. No going out with friends during weekend evenings either. Never asks to do so.

I'm in my 60s now and was allowed out till 10pm on school nights. I managed to get as many O and A levels as I needed to get to university.

Likewise with both DSs. As long as they got their homework in on time they were allowed out until 10pm two school nights per week.

Due to various activities
DD1(14/15) 9.30-10pm x2 and 11.20 (adult club, meet in the pub, just DH goes if she has HW)

DD2 9.15 from gym.

Everything here is plus 20-30 minutes travelling time, so late nights are part of life. You learn to do your HW early, or in the library at school. (Or in the bus, which of course, I don't know about).

In any case my DF and me got As for English lit which we revised only on the bus (we hated it, so we made a pact that it wasn't going to get in the way of important science and maths.)

Not allowed out on a school night apart from football training.

I used to hang out with the kids on my road until 9pm in summer. In winter, it was the same but we had to be at someone's house. I was only "out" for about an hour though, had to have done my homework first and I had to be home to have a shower before bed at 10pm.

8.30 on a school night. he knows keeping me happy with curfews and junk has perks for other things. It's too cold for hanging out atm though apparently.

I don't mind 9 when the light nights are long though.

Sons are now 22 and 19. Neither of them went out on school nights until 6th form unless supervised activities. Evn in 6th form rarely went. They were both sociable and definitely not goodie 2 shoes but went out on Friday and sat nights. Maybe cos neither was at local school and friends all over.

DD(13) not allowed out unless going to an activity or a friends house and then she is dropped off and collected. Certainly not allowed to wander around. Fortunately she doesn't want to.

Organised activities (yeah maybe to a friends before tea or to have tea but actually her afterschool timetable- and theirs- is packed) only during the week.

Definitely no "hanging around" for any of my 3 beyond occasional " shopping" at the weekend (which means trying stuff on in a shop and taking selfies apparently, money is not spent apart from on coffee!).

It's actually never been an issue for any of them staying out late on school nights. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I think their mates are in doing homework too!

DD(Y10) doesn't like to hang around outside in the evening, so that's not an issue! If she is round at a friends on a school night she will come back by 7 unless it's arranged for a pick-up later (by 9) This isn't our rules, just the way it has panned out so far!

DS(Y8) hangs around outside in the spring/summer/autumn, but is generally back by 6, 7 if he has text and asked. He is out at footy training once a week, picked up at 8.45. I foresee arguments with him as he gets older!

Should just add - neither of my teens just go out to hang around somewhere. If they go out on a school night it's to an organised activity like Scouts.

Ds1 only goes to football training during the week and then home. Apparently "all" his friends are hanging around on the street until 10-11pm. I always say "how nice for them. Aren't you unlucky you have parents who expect you to come home from school, do your homework and eat your dinner? Oh well only 3 years til you leave home and go to uni"

He does go out on weekends, during the day, he's normally home by 7-7.30 because its "too cold"

They don't go out unless there is a reason eg theatre trip, concert at school, a big party in the last week of term. Dd1 who is 15 went to a concert last term but at a venue a quarter of an hour away. Got back around 11pm in a taxi with a friend's father on his way home from work. Mid-week there is always homework & music practice to be done.

Mine doesn't go out of the house either.
But I would go for 9 pm, during the summer.

Mine doesn't go out like that. Does her horse then home.

DS15 is only allowed out on a Friday night until 7.30pm. Never on a school night although I am a bit more flexible in the summer. He too is a serious skateboarder but I don't like him out in the dark. I expect I will have to loosen the reigns a little when he leaves school in the summer.

It depends what he is doing.

Youth club in our road finishes at 9.30

Scouts finishes at 9.15, it's further but he walks home with his dad.

BackforGood · 20/01/2014 20:20

Back for when its dark, unless at an organised event from which they have a lift home. Its not the time so much as the 'hanging around.

craggyhollow · 20/01/2014 20:16

Dd doesn't go out. No meeting friends other than the weekend. Weeknights are for sports clubs, supper, homework. Bed by 9.

When we had a 14 year old they weren't allowed out on a school night! DSS2 is 16 and he is out tonight having dinner with his great aunt. This is an exceptional treat! And he has promised to be home by 10 pm.

winter ? 6pm

summer (when it's light), could stretch to 9pm if doing something specific

if simply hanging around, 8pm

mine doesn't leave the house though, except to go to school Smile
