suew - the independent opticians we used to go to charged too, it was £10 extra for barbie frames, they only had a couple of frames which were totally free, not much choice. so we switched to specsavers, same barbie frames there for free and a much wider choice.

bunch - we got dd tested at 18 months old as one day, all of a sudden, her left eye was turing inwards. turned out she has very poor eyesight and had been struggling to see anything at all, we never knew! she has very strong lenses but luckily they can grind them down so they don't look too thick. ds also has a squint but his eyesight is much better than dd's. he isn't wearing his glasses atm, but is being checked every 6 months in case his vision changes.

We use vision express. DD is on her fourth pair in about 8 months and we are there every fortnight or so getting her glasses unbent. She has two pairs on the go and both get unbent at the same time so it's approx a bend a week in the Feet household.

We went to Specsavers for ms, who recently got glasses....well...if I had known than what I know now....next time we are going to go to Vision Express....because they have those Memory glasses...that can be squished about...and they have quite a choice of frames....those Memory frames cost £20 extra, however, you get a 2. pair free.

With Specsavers we didn't have to pay extra for the 180 degree frames (where the handles can be pulled far back), but we had to pay for a 2. pair (£35)....and well, those memory frames look so much better for Kids!

Framewise, Yannic wasn't really so much into themed....it was enough for him to have cool covers...he got one Spongebob box and 1 Actionman Box for his glasses

Bunch,.... husbands family al wear glasses, and DS1 has been saying that he needs them, but did not know if it was just because his daddy had them. I think it is a good idea for all children pre school to have a quick check, and it is free.

DS1 (4.4yrs) has worn specs for about 3 mths now, I was upset at first but he has been fab with them. We got some bendy framed ones from local independent place and they are great.
Was very impressed that they just replaced pair immediately when Ds decided to test just how bendy the frames were
The frames these days are fab in comparison to NHS specs of old.

With Specsavers the vouchers seem to cover all childrens pairs, and then if you buy a spare pair you pay £35.

With Vision Express you some are free, I think, but those memory glasses you pay £20 towards, but the 2. pair comes free....

Tmmj, why are you the worlds worst mother if you are upset that your child needs glasses?
I was really upset too.
I was really upset as I have always hated being shortsighted and was worried about him being teased (which hasn't happened).

Snap TMMJ, I completely understand that feeling. DS1 is so active and he has a severe astigmatism in one eye that won't ever go away, I didn't want glasses to hinder him. They were really pleased with him when he was retested though, and he does look really cute in his specs.

Oh Chozzer i was here a month ago when I found out dd needed glasses, I was a bit sad too but it could be worse. I would agree to go to the optician that is handiest for you to get back to, could take a few weeks to get the fit right plus if it's true that boys will be boys then you will probably become one of their regulars!

DS's come from Dolland & Aitchinson - close, good cool styles fo small boys -and nectar points!

I felt a bit sad when DS was found to need them fo reading and writing, but it's lomg-sightedness so he may well grow out of it.

But he's now the kid who's shortest in his class, has a dodgy leg AND glasses. Hasn't been an issue though - you get used to it, and they do look quite cute

tmmj, glad that there is such an improvement already in your childs eyesight

Tbh, when ms eyes were tested I felt like the worst mother.....because, honestly I would have never ever guessed with him. Basically got a call from schoolnurse, saying all recpetion children were checked for hearing and eyesight and all that, and Yannic seems to be unable to see on one eye...honestly, I thought he was having her on or somehting like that.As he learned reading with ease and well, there was never any queries over his eyesight...no one suspected a thing....
well, took him to Optician and indeed he is almost blind on the right eye...I nearly fell of my chair....
he has got Stigmatism ratehr badly....and we never noticed.
Well, took ys to have an eyetest rather quickly...just incase...but he seems to be fine, even though Optician detected a slight squint...but thorough testing by eyedoctors didn't find anything.
Thing is, because es had bad problems learning to read, etc...I dragged him to the optician...and he was fine....!

I think that HV or the schools should make parents aware of the fact that some eyeproblems are not obvious, and that an eyetest should be performed pre starting school.

My son is really happy wearing his glasses and was looking forward to getting glasses...bless....and the weirdest thing is, that his glasses seem to completely blend in...he doesn't really look any different.
