Another trouser question: do you think it's ok for a SAHM to wear jeans every day, or just boring?

scampadoodle · 20/09/2007 13:14

I don't mean scraggy saggy crappy jeans with a shapeless t-shirt & rubbish bra, but good, well-fitting, flattering (hopefully) ones in various styles, worn with different tops? Before I became a SAHM I worked in a creative industry & always made an effort to look nice (tho not spectacularly trendy or anything). These days (I have 2 small boys) jeans are just so practical - they go with everything & I just have to add a groovy top or little jacket & I'm there. I cycle most places so...

But am I just being really really dull & fortysomething? What would Trinny & Tranny do ?!

I'm still wearing a maternity t-shirt - DS is 11 months old, do I have to give it up?

I am probably 50/50 skirts and trousers. I don't really get this thing about trousers being more comfortable. So long as the clothes fit they will be comfortable. I would get bored if I wore jeans all the time and it is a bit of a SAHM cliche. Tops vary between t-shirts, shirts and jumpers.

On the other hand I don't bother with make up any more. However, I do like to wear some sort of necklace as the v-neck tops look a bit bare without something round your neck.

my children are 6 and 2 and I do make an effort most days when getting dressed but it's to make me feel better, not because I care what others think (well, maybe just a little bit )
I set myself a challenge this spring that i would only wear trousers every other day, treated myself to some skirts and tops from Monsoon and voila! I felt more feminine which made me feel more sexy which meant i had more sex which meant I was happier .

The leggings thing though is playing havoc with my new rule at the moment. For example I have on a very short dress today and as the weather is not so good and my legs are no longer brown I have teamed it with a pair of knee length leggings. So does that count as a trouser day or not?

I live in jeans but sometimes have just had enough of them. Got Next trousers, a vest top and thin jumper on today. Makes a nice change.

I worlk p/t so am at home 4 days. I do tend to wear jeans most days but I do find it boring. I have most styles boycut, skinny, wideleg etc. but would love a good alternative. I think combats are unflattering (on me anyway) and cords well... just a bit dull. Skirts are OK in the summers but the whole tights/boots thing is a bit uncomfortable.

What about leggings under dresses/long tops?

jeans are unimaginative but obviously are practical and can still look nice - just dress for yourself, who cares what anyone else thinks?

I agree with DarthVader!

I'm not in a jeans phase right now, and I do like to vary what I wear. I'm in a combats phase right now, with pretty tops. Always wear good jewellery (had a new watch for my birthday ), do my hair and make-up. But I'm out and about every day.

Dexter - really like those trousers, nice waistband.
Cardy: I experimented this summer with leggings (wore them a lot in the early 80s with longish flowy skirts) but never got out of the bedroom as I have crap legs & fat knees (i have to go to a specialist site to buy knee-high boots even though I'm otherwise only a size 12!) This didn't seem to matter in the old days when I was 17 but it just didn't seem right on a 42-yr-old!

I've got a couple of different jeans styles - slouchy & bootcut - but as Nad says, sometimes I've just had enough of them. I bought some gorgeous new boots today so once it's cold enough I'll wear them with my A-line, knee-length skirts & tights. MAKE AN EFFORT!

2nd question: if one has fat knees do you think it's ok to wear patterned tights with long boots & knee-length skirt, or a really, really rubbish idea?

If she's comfortable, who cares?

bobbiewickham - I usually keep a silky dressing gown by the door to slip on before greeting unexpected callers - delivery drivers probably just think I'm a lazy cow for not being dressed by 2 pm!

Rarely wear jeans at home - find them too hot and restrictive - so tend to favour as little as poss (and always barefoot). But as I said before, each to their own - it's your home so be comfortable.

Hi scampadoodle - I bet my knees and legs are way worse than yours. I'm a size 8 to 10, yet I have to hunt around for those elusive fat-calf boots. In reply to the patterned tights question - I do that combo. I don't think anyone's collapsed laughing in the street yet (I hope). But I think the shorter skirt thing is more flattering. Long skirts make one appear fat all over - at least that's what I look like when I have seen photos of me trying to look ethereal and instead appearing like a (short) ship in full sail.

Newbie on the board but had to join in with this one!

My view on jeans? Boring but practical! Trousers made of anything but denim and I'm through the knees in 5 minutes. Denim, on the other hand, lasts about 10 .

And skirts? Are you kidding? Am I the only one who suffers from having a child's head up it all day if I venture to wear one?? Never mind standing on the hem every time I get up off the floor!

i love my jeans, wear them all the time apart from one pair of combats. dont think there frumpy or unfashionable etc. busy trying to buy a skinny pair of maternity ones of ebay. i remember the worst thing about being pregnant with dd1 was not being able to fit in my jeans and not being able to get any maternity ones.

Jeans are the best - you can get away with the same pair wearing high heels and something sparkly one day, but then wellies and a fleece the next. The fewer decisions to be made the easier it is :0

Alycat - heating bills are normal - I've just never been one to feel the cold. DH will be at home in jeans and jumper and I'm still in shorts and crop. I put it down to good circulation but maybe the spare 20 lbs provides extra insulation

I think that, unless you are going to make a real effort and wear something very striking, a really cool pair of jeans with great shoes and top beat just another pair of run of the mill trousers or a skirt.

On the one hand I would say that bootcuts are possibly a little out of date, but on the other hand I would say that on any given day, anybody without sick on their trousers is going to beat me in the chic stakes.

Since the question has been asked, yes I do think it is boring. I am actually in a bit of a jeans phase atm. Getting a bit too autumnal for my summer clothes, but I haven't got out the thick tights and boots so jeans and ballet shoes are working for me. Although yesterday I wore leggings, skirt and ballet shoes.

I ALWAYS wear jeans. Like you, I was in the 'creative industry' before DCs came along, and I ALWAYS wore jeans then too. I'm just dull, I guess.
At the moment I'm so happy to fit into pairs that I couldn't get into between my 2 pregnancies, so I (at least) feel like I'm wearing something new.
