Hair help in the time of Coronavirus, please.

Hi, I am neither stylish nor beautiful so don't normally frequent these threads. However, I'd be very grateful to you beautiful stylists for advice on how to keep my hair out of my face without a hairband, elastic bands or hairpins, as there are none in the house. I usually have a short haircut, with a layered fringe that sweeps out over my ears, and I was due to go the hairdressers for a trim (my hair grows very fast) about 6 weeks ago, but decided not to as I was already thinking of the risks of not socially/physically distancing myself (I'm in a vulnerable category or two). My fringe is now almost permanently in my eyes and I'm trying to find a video which will show me how to tie a tie or a belt to make a hairband to keep my hair out of my eyes so I don't have to keep pushing it back and touching my face. I am useless at doing my hair, can't even blow-dry it into shape, so need something basic and simple. Thank you so much in advance for any pointers you might give me! I saw a similar video to this on insta a few days ago. Just make sure you stretch the cut piece of T-shirt a lot. It does look nice and hopefully it will help you.

@VaggieMight - thank you, you are my saviour! I have finally found an old knee-high pop sock thing and worked out how to do it (being a bear of very little brain), and my hair is well off my face! The band is quite tight, though, due to my extremely fat head! Anyhow, that is definitely the best solution, thank you for the suggestion!
For those who blithely suggest I should trim my fringe myself, please see photo attached, which is how I would look if I tried it! (I would also doubtless be in hospital having damaged my eyes with the scissors!)

Have you thought about just giving your hair a trim?

Cut up the biggest t-shirt you have into a long strip about 5cm wide (maybe a mans t-shirt for the length, cut from the neck down to the hem?) T-shirts are both stretchy and non-fraying. Use that as a headband (can tie underneath at the nape or on top of head but nape probably best).

Any square/triangle of fabric can be tied as, for want of a better word, Amish type head scarf. If you comb a bit of hair product through it should reduce wisps falling out.

Depending on how long it is 1 or 2 French plaits lose and tight to the head will work in tidying up short straying hair.

Yeah you need something with a bit of stretch to it. I’m in exactly the same position and I’ve tied it up in a of tights knotted on top. Works really well. I actually quite like the way it looks and it’s so comfortable - I might continue with this after lockdown!

Is it a spare shower cap? If so, cut off the cap part and just use the elasticated part.

Or cut up an old skirt for a scarf?

I was going to suggest tights too - leggings/a sleeve from a stretchy top you don’t want might do?

You know when you were a kid and you took off a T-shirt and left it around your head like a sort of Pocahontas headdress? You could do that as a last resort.

Or use a scarf in the way that you would wrap a towel around your head after a shower? Might need a safety pin somewhere as scarves are more slippery than towels.

Those suggesting I cut it myself - you don't know me, but even before I had arthritic joints, it would still not have been an option! Imagine the clumsiest, most cack-handed, useless idiot who can barely tie their own shoelaces and can hardly hold a pen, let alone a pair of scissors, and you have me
No thick old tights here, live in a warm climate.
Can just about manage tacking stitch if I can see to thread the needle.
No, the shower cap will just have to do withe the double glasses as next-best option!

I use one of these. You could make something similar from an old t-shirt if you're at all handy wit a needle and thread

Cut a wide strip from a leg of an old pair of thickish tights to use as a hairband (across the leg, obviously, so it is a ready made ring)

When your hair gets longer you can use thinner strips instead of a hair elastic for a pony tail.

Tea towel? I sometimes fold a j-cloth in diagonally to make a long strip and tie it round my head when DIYing.

Have you an old t-shirt you can cut up? Strips 2-3 inches wide, measure round your head + cut to that length plus 1-2 inches, tie the ends together

No hair equipment of any kind at all here, @Raffathebear. Belts or ties are the only things available to keep my fringe off my face.
Oh well, looks as if I'm just going to keep having the husband laughing wildly at me whilst I'm cooking! I think I might wear my shower cap, actually, that might be the most practical!

I've checked the online store I was hoping to be able to buy a hairband from, but whaddaya know, other women brighter than me got there first and they're sold out!
