Guardian love THAT M&S Dress!

Ah I posted a different guardian article where they were saying how nice it was. I'd like to see jess Cartner-Morley actually wearing the bloody thing.

All this dress for the office and a night out stuff makes me laugh. I remember reading glamour in my early twenties and imagining everyone working in London wearing glam dresses for work and changing into their high heels and red lipstick for a night out to move it from daywear to nightwear. Well actually our office just rolls out out to the local docklands pub where nobody gives a crap what you wear. And you certainly wouldn't bother taking fancy shoes, more likely to change into trainers!

All those clothes are "I've been very ill and am stumbling back towards health in my now-oversize dressing gown clothes".
Or possibly "Im a survivor of some kind of disaster and am wearing donated clothes".

I was in a largish M &S yesterday, picking up t-shirts for dcs, and the dress had pride of place.

I then popped into Zara, and there are loads of similar dresses there too. Bit of a fire risk, I reckon.

Possibly, but it's not any fashion I've ever seen. I think they are pushing it hard. These articles are a result of a very concerted and heavy pr campaign to get the dress mentioned. All I can think is they have committed to a lot of these in different colours and it's going to cost them big so they are throwing PR money at it to get it to sell.

It's not a love or loathe it piece. There is simply no doubt it makes the wearer look like a twat. Even the models can't carry it off, the average female has no hope.

Fashion is often love it or loathe it, but this is the first piece I've seen where it's universally mocked snd no one can make it look good. It's a big pink polyester kaftan with fluted sleeves. The designer one is st least shaped and good material.

Just to be fair to M&S, by the way, their children's (and men's, for my stupidly tall 13 year old) t-shirts and shorts look good this year. Much better than Zara, John Lewis or Next, and I like their sizing (ie. 9-10 years, then 10-11 years, then 11-12 years). If you have a tall 10 year old, you're miles better with a size 10-11 years, as you'll get two years out of it. The other shops seem to go: 9-10, then 11-12.

I'd see the dreadful one is called 'flute sleeved'. One if my colleagues refers to anyone being a prat as a flute.

If it's 'flute sleeved' in the Irish sense of the word 'flute', then... yeeeees.

I would wear that dress only if I wanted to look like a character from The Handmaid's Tale.

But you're all right about M&S targeting the wrong market. I'm 25 and I only go in there to buy tights, delicious snacks and in the sale for kids clothes and granny cardies. I won't be going in there for that dress. They just need to stick to doing basics well for right market.

Daily Mail Femail have written an article on it! I think it looks quite nice actually! Especially with the bow tied around the neck!

The Guardian keep ads and editorial very separated, unless clearly marked sponsored content, so definitely weren't paid to put this in. JCM must have just chosen it.

I never see any fashion in the Guardian I like. Never. But it's only reading this thread that's made me realise that maybe that's because it's so bad, and not because I'm somehow just not getting it! I love Grazia and enjoy their fashion (even the stuff I wouldn't wear) but with the Guardian it's always just wtf?

But even having said that I wonder if JCM and her team are mumsnetters and featured the pink dress and its fabulousness for a laugh / dare :o

Really, it doesn't look like any known style or era. It looks like a collection of oddments sewn together in 20 minutes in the dark by a sealion, it's 100% flipping polyester (of course ), and it has a collection of features that ensure it would suit no one - the high front neck, low back, sack shape and in-your-soup sleeve thing.

It's actually like a work of art, it's so iconically unwearable.

The Guardian fashion page always looks like it's been styled by an achingly trendy charity shop in Shoreditch. Which is weird, since Sali Hughes' beauty page is reliable, relatable and normal.

Yes but high-fashion, directional "pieces" are not just out-there and a bit weird, they also tend to beautiful, well-made and informed by great design skills. At mytheresa or matches there are loads of odd-looking frocks but in a way that works beautifully, or references something or is artistic or whatever.

M&S seem to think you can just make something bizarre out of cheapo fabric, market it heavily and hey presto, fashion piece.

That dress was praised in yesterday's Times fashion pages, too!

I honestly don't know why everyone is getting so excited about it, there are certainly loads of hideous stuff out there and I actually think on the right person it looks quite cute. I'd rather see someone in that dress then some boring safe outfit that everyone else is wearing!

It's not the most hideous dress ever, what's winding people up is it being marketed and and puffed up as so great when it's really odd.

Not liking The Dress doesn't mean we all prefer boring and safe.

No Lady, I can't buy anything at the moment as I'm moving soon and my suitcase is jammed packed, I do have 3 dresses with flute sleeves though, one is black and white polka dot, one is floral lace and one has little pink clovers all over it! I just love little dresses, and a nod to the 60s is just my thing! Team them with suede boots and I'm in heaven!
