Tipping hairdressers...

I've just been to a new hairdressers and had lovely haircut but nice lady but there was no tip box and I paid by card, so no discreet way to tip.

I find this kind of thing EXCRUTIATING. How much should I have left her and what is the best way to do it?

I had half head highlights and a cut, so was £134.

I don't tip my hairdresser, I pay enough for a cut and blow dry thank you very much!

I pay about £130 for cut and colour and don't tip - I think I pay quite enough! If I went to a cheaper hairdresser I would tip though as I imagine they are paid less. I always tip when I get DS's hair cut.

I tip £5 to stylist and £5 to highlight guy. The whole thing costs a fortune.

Looks like I'm the only one that doesn't tip waitresses as a matter of course either. I didn't realise I was so rare!

I am pleased to find others find it as difficult as me, but wonder why something hasn't been done about it if we, as a nation, find it so awkward?

I wish tipping did not exist. We're not made for it we really aren't.

I tip cheap hairdressers, a fiver or whatever is in my purse - sometimes I don't have anything in my purse, so I tip a bit more next time or if she does the kids hair. I find it terribly embarrassing. If I pay more than £50 I don't tip - I figure I'm paying enough. No idea about beauticians - never have tipped, don't go very often..? I always tip waiting staff and taxi drivers.
It never occurred to me to tip Ocado!

I leave £10 with the person who takes the money, and ask them to sort it out between the people who've looked after me.

I find it so embarrassing I only go to the hairdressers every few months!!

I ALWAYS tip a fiver, but then my current hairdresser costs £19 for cut and style . I'd still tip if more, and used to when I paid an extortionate (for here) £50 for the same. I hand the tip to the stylist after I've paid and say thankyou. I tip the barber who cuts my sons hair too, a couple of quid. Only time I haven't is when the cut has been crap, and then I've not gone back either.

It is confusing, does anyone tip shopping delivery? I never have but dh thought he was maybe lingering for a tip the other day. And apparently neighbours said they rip bin men at Xmas and have extra stuff taken away, whereas mine rubbish ends up strewn across street so tbh why should I tip them

I don't tip my hairdresser. I feel awkward about tipping all round. I tip at restaurants and in taxis, but that's it, and I wish the custom of tipping them would die a death. Prices should reflect the cost.

And as for the excuse that "tipping ensures good service", in the case of waiters/waitresses etc. good service should be expected and they should lose their jobs if they're rude. What about others who serve the public? (checkout staff, shop assistants, bank tellers and many others) Why do we tip some and not others?

I always tip my freelance hairdresser and always have - she's been coming to me for about 10 years. I've never asked her about it, just slightly awkwardly given her the money. For 10 years. Far too British to have an actual conversation about it!

I don't tip as a rule. It's an outdated practice and makes people feel awkward. Employers should be paying decent wages but if people keep tipping this won't happen.

I never tip hairdressers- I hate the whole concept of tipping.

I was chatting to my hairdresser once about the costs to him of running the salon. The council tax bill was astronomical and the council didn't even remove the cut hair - he had to hire a separate company to get rid of all business waste. Rent on the shop was also very high. In the end he had to move out of town, which then has the effect of cutting down trade even more, because no one is just passing and pops in. So, if I was tipping, I would tip the owner if they happened to be the one cutting my hair.

That said, I disagree with the concept of tipping generally. Staff should be paid decent wages and prices should be up front and clear. No one should have to rely on tips to get by and in continuing with this system we just encourage employers to pay shitty wages and cause embarrassment for customers, who are not sure what is appropriate.

Shop workers etc work just as hard and are not well paid and they don't get tips, which it isn't fair.

I had a semi-permanent colour, cut & blow dry yesterday; whole thing came to £61, so I left £5 for the stylist, £3 for the colourist and £1 for the shampoo girl.

I wouldn't tip the salon owner if he cut my hair, though.
