The way parents and schools think about the contents of children’s lunchboxes has changed over the years, but the excitement of realising mum or dad has given you a favourite treat remains the same. DC2 top treat is a babybel, DS1 likes a little pot if seaweed. Both salty and good for protein I suppose.

Nibblies - this was a lunch consisting of tiny boxes of whatever was left in the fridge. Cubes of cheese, a few grapes, a cracker, some cooked meat... I later found out it was when my parents were actually running out of food, but my sister and I thought we were getting a real treat!

Dairylea triangles were an occasional but very exciting treat.

Also, (again once in a blue moon) a Mr Kipling French Fancy. I don't think I could eat one now as it would be too sickly.

My mum used to make a lot of flapjack which I hated. I tend to give my girls the same old thing in their lunch boxes although they have better snacks than I did - Kitcats and twixes! We had boring old blue riband biscuits. I always put a little post it note in my daughters lunchbox saying hello - I know she is finding school a bit tricky and thought it would make her laugh. They have nutella sandwches as a treat - definitely not something my mum would approve of.

Chocolate spread sandwich was always the treat item if I was lucky! Other than that I would look forward to my apple which always seemed crunchier in those days than they do now.

I used to have crackers and cheese. Sometimes crisps or a biscuit. Always an apple or banana to eat and squash to drink. I love soreen. We've tried all the new flavours I think the banana and original are our favourites. My family have a slice as a snack after school.

I lived close to my school so went home for lunch. My favourite lunch, which my mum made me most days, was a Wensleydale, tomato and beetroot sandwich on white Mother's Pride bread and a mint Club biscuit or Breakaway. And Kia Ora orange squash. Eaten whilst watching The Sullivans on the telly 😊

My packed lunches usually contained sandwiches with Shipham's chicken paste, which came in a tiny glass bottle. I'm sure the ingredients were horrific as it cost pennies! I liked it though.
I'd sometimes get some home baking, a fairy cake or a slice of fruit loaf maybe.

Whenever I have wotsits these days or sunny delight, it always brings back memories.

I recall soup in a flask, trio, Capri suns, billy bear, luncheon meat or paste sandwiches. Fruit, viscounts or club biscuits..thingie crisps or tangy toms crisps. Raisin boxes and if a school trip maybe a quarter bag of sweets like shebhert pips or cola cubes.

I also liked baguettes with stinky soft cheese but my classmates objected.

At infant and junior school I went home for lunch, as we lived very near to school and most mums didn't work in those days (60s).

In senior school (70s) I remember peanut butter or chocolate spread sandwiches, trio or club biscuit, and those fish and chips shaped snacks in the packet that looked like newspaper. Not a fruit or salad item to be seen!
