One of my sisters has a learning diasability and managed just about OK in primary school and really struggled in secondary school. My parents very reluctantly moved her to a "special" school. She immediately blossomed and gained so much confidence, going from a person who had no self-esteem and described herself as "stupid" to a self-sufficient young lady. I don't know what would have happened to her without this crucial move.

I would have thought that it very much depends on the child and the SN.

Just as it was wrong in the past to exclude all sn from mainstream, it is just as wrong to force all SN into mainstream.

Inclusion as it stands is an excercise in cost cutting, mainstream provision is cheaper than special school provions. And inclusion is horribly underfunded. It might have worked for more children if it had been properly funded, with realistic training for staff and was flexible enough to meet the individual needs of individual students.

As it is, it is a horrible mess and the most vulnerable children suffer most.
