School transport what to do?

Ds is entitled to school transport and in this borough they also pay parents mileage. It is costing me a fortune to get ds to and from school. I cannot decide what to do for the best.

I have been told by LA there is one place on the school bus and ds has said that he would go on the bus.

However, I don't think he could tolerate it (although he does like the idea) At the moment he cant stand noise on the way to and from school. He listens to music on the way to and from and gets very irritated by any other noise, especially talking or other peoples voices (even on the radio, he skips through any talking bits). Its also a new school that ds has started and he suffers with high anxiety etc.

The LA have told me I wont get mileage paid as there is a space on the school bus, but sent me a form regardless.

Should I give the school bus a try?

Im driving and its costing me a fortune, im on a very low income hence why im applying! just adds to the madness of it all, never mind hopefully my 'case worker' will jump through hoops too!

I would try the bus. That establishes the need for transport. If he can't cope with it then the LA has a duty to provide non stressful transport. For some children they need (in LA speak) a 'single occupancy vehicle'.

You try the bus, if he doesn't cope you remove him from the bus and ask for his own taxi due to the big bus being too stressful or say you are willing to drive for expenses. At that point the LA will be happy to pay you as its cheaper Wink

Councils are desperate to save money and transport is a big cost for some LAs so caseworkers are themselves having to jump through hoops for their managers to justify every penny.

Its the same hoops as before Claw - you know the drill you have to prove failure at step 1 to get to step 2.

Oh and you need school to say his behaviour is worse after he has been on the bus, because they won't believe you. Same s**t different day!

Hopefully he will get on the school bus, love it and that will be the end of that!

However in the meantime, its costing me a fortune, almost half of my weekly income just to get ds to and from school. Then add to that the daily amount I am paying just so ds can eat something in school. Last week he had a school trip, another £10, then a charity disco, another £5. I can barely afford to feed my family!

Blimey Star I thought you were joking about it going before a 'panel' etc!

I have just spoken to my case worker and apparently it has to go before 'Statutory assessment panel' ?? who will be meeting in a 'few weeks'

I mean, really.

Oh well I confirmed what I was told in writing via email and set out the Law about duty of LA and eligibility criteria for them to put before 'panel' and copied in social worker.

Just had a phone call, they will be providing transport as from Monday and it doesn't have to go before 'panel' after all! Smile

Dunno whether to be happy or cross.

Obviously I'm happy for you and your ds, but ffs, what an outrageous attempt at abdication.

Well done though. It must feel great at last to be able to get them to jump through their own bloody hoops.

My thoughts exactly Star, what if I didn't know the relevant Law and criteria to copy and paste into my 'application' to go before 'panel'.

I did say a quiet 'yeees' when I put the phone down!

I suggest you try claiming mileage retrospectively to cover at least the period from when you first sent the application for school transport.

Yes!

Speak to school or put in a note in his book to say he is starting on the bus on Monday and can then let you know his mood when he arrives or if they notice any differences in his behaviour so you can check he is coping ok.

Just in case you need evidence later....

Thanks just need to wait for the transport company to contact me to confirm Monday start and times etc. If I don't hear, I will chase them up.
