So I had a phone call from a nhs salt who has assessed my ds once, six months ago. She wanted to aske me some questions because she is writing the report for assessment for statement. Apart from being shocked she just phoned me and didn't make an appointment to assess him, she said that she is going to recommend that my ds has 6 salt sesions per term as part of his statement of sen. My ds is 3 and has asd. His receptive language is echolalic and he has no comprehension.
Does this sound like enough speech therapy?
What does everyone think?

It might not make much difference in real terms. I know dozens of people with SALT specified in their child's statements but they don't get anything. I also heard somewhere that SALT have to meet certain targets and only work with those children they can make significant progress with. It might not be true, and I don't want to be negative with you, but that's what I've heard.

You might be asked to do some work at home with your child. TBH, in this area, we are lucky if a child sees a SALT once a year!

You need to get SALT specified and quantified in parts 2 and 3 of the statement. Then the LEA HAVE to provide it - even if there are no SALTS. We did this but had a bit of a fight. Have a look at the IPSEA website for more details.

6 sessions a term might be the maximum the lea provide. In our area it is 6 hours maximum a year - however some of this time might be advising parents/ LSEs what to do in between visits.

Legally they can't give a maximum though.

It depends how badly you need it. To get it quantified and in parts 2 and 3 will be a battle, but it is one you should win if you decide to go for it (test case on it with clear conclusions).
