Just wondering if anyone can help with this ..

I have a 7 year old son .( He has an autistic twin sister , 2 dyslexic brothers, one ADHD brother and one dyslexic parent ).

My son is very very bright ...he taught himself to read at age 3 , he could add hundreds in nursery and can work a computer better than I can.

He is a very very good reader . His current favorite is an large and heavy dinosaur book ...he wants to be a palaeontologist ( his words ) . He has no trouble with long Latin names of the dinosaurs .

At school he was taken out of his classroom for " special lessons" with the brightest children ....he's at a level 2 or 3 levels higher than his age for Maths . For language his reading is off the charts , but his level writing is not matching his general overall. The reason for this appears to be the length of time it takes for him to put anything down on paper . He is given quite hard words to " spell" . Mentally ( verball exercises) he can manage ok ( 7 or 8 letter words ) , but the length of time he takes to write them is far far too long .

He said its because hes not sure of how they look and he needs to make it look right so he has to concentrate .

Is it possible that he could also be dyslexic , whilst being slightly hyperlexic ( he's not fully hyperlexic because he understands what he is reading ) ....Mabey he's just a precocious reader that's good at Maths ? .

The school is reluctant to investigate.

Haven't made it clear that my son is getting very distressed at not being able to finish his writing tasks " on time" ( or even at all ) and is now saying that he is stupid . Sad .

Ooh found intresting link , working memory can sometimes be linked to ADHD .

It is the same parts of the brain that are affected by OCD ,dyslexia, ADHD, autism , ect ect, .

Bugger , think we have a flawed bit of brain in our gene pool .

Hmm Confused

Have a look at the nagc assessment. They do a working memory test as well as others which could shed some light on how he's learning?

Could "just" be a delay with his grapho-motor skills?
