Sleep

9 week old feeding/sleep

Hi everyone.

This may be something I just have to live with but if there is anything out there that would help I would love to know. My 9 week old has been a rubbish sleeper from the beginning. I think contributes by the fact she won't take more than 3oz at any feed and during the night that often becomes even less.

She will sleep from 6pm till 9pm and feed well then (3-3.5. Oz) but after that like clock work up every bang in 2 hours sucking her hand wanting fed but taking sometimes 3oz sometimes 2 and even sometimes just one. She doesn't fall asleep on the bottle. She just refuses anymore milk when she's done.

Anyway my point is I'm getting no sleep as in-between when she is sleeping she's so fricking noisy that she wakes me up constantly. Is there ANYTHING I can do to get her to sleep better? Getting her to sleep isn't actually the problem it's the quality/time.

Thanks all. Know it's long x

Is that at me Harrysmummy246? Across a couple of threads you seem angry at me. I don't mean to offend you or anyone else by offering an option or suggestion.

As mentioned already "normal [very] is a wide range" and will include babies feeding very frequently and babies feeding very infrequently and sleeping through at this age. As you say, one size doesn't fit all and not all biologically normal behaviour involves night feeds at this age. Some does, in fact most do. I maintain from reading the OP it sounds like baby wants to suck but not milk - there is no need to make any parent feel non-biologically normal for having such a baby.

You rarely hear on forums about the babies sleeping through at this age, because such parents have little to complain about. But they definately exist and are definately "normal" babies.

I'm sorry that you feel the need to shout in caps lock at me. No need for the attitude.

You're really recommending not feeding a 2mo baby overnight? Without even asking if they're tracking a line/ nappy output etc ok?
That's potentially actually dangerous. And I'm pretty sure your advice to every post ever has been exactly the same, assuming one size fits all newsflash NOT ALL HUMANS ARE THE SAME. YOU ARE IGNORING BIOLOGICALLY NORMAL BEHAVIOUR.

Surely if a baby is a "little and often" feeder they won't be able to go for 8 hours with no milk!?

No. Quite reasonable and within the scope of normal for a bottle fed 9 week old to have all the milk they need over 16h.

Just like what's happening to the It's baby also being within the scope of normal. Normal is a wide range.

OP has asked if there ANYTHING she can do to get her baby to sleep better? I answered - Yes, there is. I'm a sleep consultant, I can think of many, many things the OP can do to improve her baby's sleep. The simplest and most basic is to try a dummy. That is why I suggested it, I'm trying to offer help.

@FATEdestiny

Better to have a little and often drinker through the daytime so that it allows you to have a baby not needing any calories at night.

3oz feeds would be perfectly fine if given every 2h through the daytime (given as 4oz bottles in case baby wants more)

3oz given 9 times a day
7am 9am 11am 1pm 3pm 5pm 7pm 9pm and 11pm dreamfeed is 27oz over 24h - enough for dummy and no feeds 11pm-7am

Surely if a baby is a "little and often" feeder they won't be able to go for 8 hours with no milk!?

OP's child is behaving in a completely biologically normal way and she really needs to just go with it. 9 weeks is FAR to young to try any form of night weaning. Leave it to 6 months, earliest.

@FATEdestiny

Try a dummy.

Sounds like she wants to comfort suck but doesn't want the milk.

I would only introduce the dummy after the bottle - if she's only taking 3oz per feed durig the day then she's probably a "little and often" snacky sort of baby and she's waking because she's actually hungry, so don't replace food with plastic.

At 9 weeks, it's really normal for her to be waking a lot. You just have to get through it, unfortunately.

Hi. Thank you for the reply. Yes we use white noise it works really well to get her off to sleep. No difference on keeping her asleep longer. They said she didnt have tongue tie when she was born but she has her 8 weeks vacs and check on Wednesday so will ask the doctor again then.

Has she been checked for tongue tie im just wondering that if she is only taking 3oz getting her to take more might get her to sleep. Have you got a white noise machine too- we were advised to get one that was on all night it really helped
