Sleep

7 year old early riser

DS, 7 has always been an early riser, he goes to bed on time and isn't too bad getting to sleep, however he is always up at 6am-ish regardless of the day or what time he went to sleep the night before. We try to get him to go back to sleep but once he has been up for the loo etc he finds it difficult. He will read in his room until 7.30am at the weekend but by that time we have all been awake since 6am, as this is very day, we are permanently knackkered. Have blackout blinds, room not too hot etc. Is this just a boy thing or is there anything we can do? Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA Smile

He's more than old enough to go sort himself out downstairs and leave you asleep.

fix floor boards and your sorted

Agree withering him go down and turn on the telly. 6am isn't ridiculously early really. Ds1 has always been an early riser. He slept until half 7 the other morning and I knew that meant he was under the weather. He wakes up before half 6 usually and just goes down and turns his xbox on. I think he is glad of the uninterrupted playing actually.

My dd was like this (she's in her twenties now and still wakes up early). She just went downstairs, got some cereal and watched a video/tv.
At 7 he should be able to quietly occupy himself and not disturb anyone else.

I don't think there's anything you can do apart from reinforce the need for quietness and consideration for others when he wakes up.

My eldest - going on for 7 - is the same and always has been. It's soooo much easier now one of us doesn't have to get up with him. He's meant to stay in his room until 6.30 but if he's quiet enough I don't know whether he does or not! He gets his own breakfast (cereal, fruit) and plays FIFA or Minecraft on the iPad or desktop, draws, reads or makes things from the recycling pile.

I agree 6am isn't horrendous. That being said, I had 5.20 this morning so I'm probably conditioned...

I wouldn't consider 6am particularly early. It's the time I need to be up during the week to get to work so I don't try and push a wake up any later than 6 in my DCs - if they go later it's bonus but it makes getting out of the house easier if we're all up together. Obviously I'd love a lie in at the weekend, but hey ho.

4:45am like DS2 gave me this morning. Now that's ridiculous.

So sort out the squeaky floorboards!

I really think that at seven he could be doing something quietly without waking you up. I also have a seven-year-old early rising boy and he just gets up, goes to the loo and comes downstairs to watch telly or play on the iPad or something. I also used to wake at this time when I was a kid and I just put my light on and read a book until 7. At this age DC are old enough to understand the need to be considerate and let others sleep.

Can't he just go downstairs and watch TV quietly ?

My ds has always woken up between 5 and 6, he's now 10, so I think he's just an early riser! He's not allowed out of his bedroom til 7 though. He just occupies himself til then and then gets up to have breakfast.

Because his room is next to ours, creaky floorboards, he doesn't flush either...

Why are you all awake at 6? I'd be asking him to tiptoe and not flush the loo [grin[
