Sleep

almost 9 month early waking

i realise this is a small problem compared to many other sleep issues but my dd has started waking no later than 5.30. she will not go back to sleep and as a result is still tires amd grouchy all morning until a morning nap. she goes to bed between 6.30-7 as she cant stay up any later. on a typical day she takes two 1.5 hr naps a day 9-10.30 and 1.30-3. I have tried:

shorter naps
longer naps
earlier bedtime
later bedtime
leaving her in her cot whining until 6.20 whih I think is acceptable and her old wake up time.

i wouldnt mind but she is very grouchy in the morning and too tired for breakfast. it is an effort to keep her up until 9. Thoughts gratefully received

Yes I know what you mean. Short naps drove me bonkers too. But I am a strong believer in waking the baby as know my older dd would have slept all day and partied all night left to her own devices!

Thanks mewkins - I am inherently suspicious of Gina as found her new born stuff ridiculous.
My little man despite going to sleep on his own just wouldn't nap for more than half an hr - I drove myself a bit bonkers trying to follow her schedules as my little guy just couldn't do it.
I have friends who it has worked perfectly for from birth (so appreciate it works for some babies)

The thought of waking him breaks my heart!!! I spent months obsessing over his 30mins nap!

Ps. Should take 3 to 7 days to gradually sort itself if you try to stick to the times.

Yes it's one of the joys of babies....at the point when they start napping for longer is the point at which you need to start cutting naps! I follow Gina's times and as much as people don't like her I find her timings have always been spot of for babies over 6 months.

My 8 month old wakes between 5-5.30 and takes up to an hour but will go back to sleep eventually. I just keep telling myself this is better than 3.30-4 we had before and looking forward to clocks going forward Wink

Ahhh so because he is 8months now he should be awake until 9.30 and then only have half an hr?
He used to only ever do half HR naps so I was enjoying the novelty of him sleeping for longer but then he just started waking earlier ????

Hi! I was getting confused as to this zombie thread til I saw your post! How old is your little one? The key is definitely to keep awake til 9am for a baby and 9.20/30 for 7months plus (gradually getting later until it's a quick 15 min power nap). Have you got a sling? When he gets grouchy put him in that and distract, talk, sing etc il nap time. Wake from nap no later than 10am. After a week or so he will start to understand and hopefully start waking later again. (And then the clocks change and it all goes to pot!). Basically if the morning nap is too early or too long they see this as an extension of night sleep so start cutting back on that.

Hi - realise this is an old thread but anyone crack the early wakings! My LO used to go to 6/6.30 but it's been getting earlier and earlier ?? I can't keep him up until 9am so I guess this could be part of the problem. Anyone got some happy stories to tell me?!

ditto about getting stressed about bad naps, I probably shouldn't but I do get wound up about it, and then dread the day with my overtired baby! I often make the mistake of trying to get her to go back to sleep (in cot, pram, car whatever) and these days she NEVER does, once she's awake she will only go back to sleep 3ish hours later!
For example, I put her down at 1,20 today she was asleep by half past. I have just heard her squeaking at 2pm, aggh! although it has gone quiet so perhaps it was just a squeak this time. I wish I could be one of those relaxed mumma's who go with the flow but I just can't!
You go for your 6.30, that is the first time of day that is seriously human .

Yes it was my target, of course now we have 6am I want 6.30... Grin but yes it's not bad really especially given she is cutting a tooth poor lamb.

sorry to hear of your napping woes - I actually find bad napping one of the hardest things to deal with as I get paranoid about overtiredness and end up tramping the streets with the pram muttering 'go to bloody sleep' like a mad woman. Hope it improves. I often do naps in the pram at home so I can rock dd back to sleep if she wakes too early.

wasn't 6am your target?! In which case, hurrah! It's still bloody early but it isn't the dreaded 5.30. My DD is completely inconsistant, and is also napping extremely badly at the moment. She is making a giant fuss about it every time, then isn't staying asleep for long. Always one sleep problem after another...!!

hello! well we seem to have a lot of 6ams at the moment - somewhere between 10 to 6 and 10 past 6. Given the consistency I don't think there's anything particularly causing it, I think she's just had enough sleep ... could be worse i suppose

backinaminute sorry to hear you are in the early wake up club, it's a right pain, and exhausting. My daughter has done a few good mornings in the last few days but I can't pinpoint it to anything for sure. If I get another couple of reasonable wake up times, I think I am going to say that the very early bedtime to avoid overtiredness is what is helping. I've not changed anything else other than making sure she's in bed earlier than other babies seem to go!

haha, yep my 3 7am starts are definitely making me the new expert round here Wink

Well, on a very tired day she does 2 lots of 1.5 hours - that's my dream nap day. In reality they are more like 1hr - 1hr15 each. Yesterday however, she slept 45 mins in the morning and 1hr 15 in the afternoon. In my expert opinion it doesn't make any difference to the night sleep at the moment! I never wake her from naps unless it is excessive (like more than two hours, so about twice in her life)

wow! ok you are the new guru Grin how long does your dd nap for roughly?

Report
brightonbythesea · 08/08/2013 07:29

5 minutes to 7 this morning. I can't quite believe it, and I'm sure it is will not last. I have not changed naps (they vary in length but fall about the same time 9 and 1.30) and I am putting her in bed early, i.e. in her cot no later than 6.30 sometimes as early as 6.20 to avoid overtiredness which happens to her easily, especially if naps have been a bit ropey.

Perhaps the few days of just not responding to her last week did the trick, no idea but I'm sure I will be back in the next day or two discussing the repeat of 5.30!

Not just us then - it's painful. I've just come on here to see if anyone has any solutions for exactly the same thing.

Ds2 (8mo) shares a room with his brother and is fine from 7pm till about 5am. I then have to whip him out as he really cries and won't settle back down. I've always fed back to sleep in our bed but this has lost it's magic touch.

We co-slept as a newborn but its not quite the same with a wriggly, scratching 8mo. Not so much sleepy snuggles but a battle in semi-darkness.

Maybe it's a phase and he will grow out of it........ His brother has a gro-clock which is brill and he stays in bed till 7. We bought it when he went from waking at half 7 to 6 - and we thought that was problematic! (Oh how lucky we were).

It is now 6.49 and he is already knackered - marvellous Grin

ooh, a repeated 7am, amazing! let me know if you crack the secret!

yesterday we had 6am and no going back to sleep, today we had 5.30 wake but she went back to sleep within a couple of minutes and without any white noise assistance, woke at 6.40. A bit short on nap time today so let's see if she wakes earlier or later tomorrow...

we also had a couple of wakes in the middle of the night last night [yawn] hope it's not the start of the dreaded 9 month regression!

brightonbythesea · 07/08/2013 07:32

well, in the last 3 days I've had 2x 7am and 1x 5.40. Obviously largely pleased with this, as I've heard her stir and go back to sleep on the later wake up days.

Nothing different on any day, similar naps, same bedtime, fairly busy days. I wish I knew what it was, so I could get the 7ish wake time consistent...

I stirred about 5.30 and wondered where the dulcit tones of my daughter were...! But I actually went back to sleep until she woke up. Feels good! She was really tired by 9 (lightweight) but stayed up till just after 9.30 for her nap. I find usually I'm like you - once she's made a noise I'm up anyway.

Yes perhaps this one lie-in will give me the energy I need for the rest of the week :-)

she doesn't always but I think it helps... especially if she seems genuinely tired rather than bouncy and wide awake. I have a Sleep Sheep (was a gift) which makes the noise but I actually think that a phone app or something might be better, as the sheep cuts off after 40 mins. Sound of waves seems to work best for dd and it has to be really loud.

well at least you got one lie in! or did you wake up anyway? I find that happens to me if dd sleeps unexpectedly long, gah.

I hope it continues, but I have doubt...
That's great that she goes back off with the white noise - I don't think my one would do that. Do you have a machine or use a noise off your phone?
