Snowboarding clothes

Son age 13 is snowboarding in March. What's the difference between snowboarding trousers and skiing trousers - could he wear ski trousers? I can't seem to find reasonably priced snowboarding clothes, and wondering if there's much difference to ski wear, and will it matter?

massistar I was joking!! I ski and board and I have goggles and glasses. I prefer glasses in the spring. You can wear what you like. Can’t believe anyone gets this uptight about goggles vs glasses. 😂

Decathlon and mountain warehouse do decent ski/snowboard stuff at a reasonable price - my advice is to make sure trousers have plenty of vents (zips) as a beginner he’ll be falling over a lot and getting hot!

Most boarders wear goggles over helmet rather than sunglasses.

Wrist protectors! And I got shorts with coccyx protector and knee pads - all of which I was eternally grateful for! Make sure his jacket has a snow skirt

We all wear sunglasses - I think goggles look ridiculous unless it's actually snowing!

My DS alternates between skiing and snowboarding and wears the same clothes. As a beginner he'll be fine in general ski stuff. There's a lot of falling over at the beginning which isn't a big problem in soft snow but can get painful if icy!

Most important item is a good helmet as cracks to the skull are common as you tend to fall backwards. Personally I'd go goggles as less likely to fall off when he faceplants.

user you make a good point about getting expensive glasses suitable for the snow. Such a brilliant idea for a 13 year old. 😂🥰.

Anyway, I have seen a few facial injuries on the snow with sunnies. I think goggles are a better choice for everyone especially children.

I’ve skied all my life and have always preferred glasses unless it’s snowing. When I was a kid I fell at speed and skidded on my face on ice. My face was a bloody mess but my sunnies were fine. it’s worth getting proper skiing glasses. Cheap ones may not give good enough protection and are much more likely to snap.

Don’t get sun glasses! That’s terrible advice for a beginner!

If you fall, the glasses could easily snap/break and hurt your quote badly. Goggles are much much safer. Pop a cheapo pair of sunnies in his arm pocket.

He will need-
L/sleeve top
Hoodie/sweatshirt
Jacket
Snow trousers
Thick long socks
Gloves
Goggles
Sun block
Lip balm

Jackets and trousers that have zips you can open to vent are ideal as you do get hot/cold.

I would say he will most likely get hot but better to have layers you can strip off than be cold.

I ski and snowboard and wear the same clothes for both. I doubt he’ll need thermals or a neck buff in March. We went to PdS in mid March a couple of years ago and it was roasting, don’t think I even wore my jacket.
Decathlon is good quality and cheap. I get all my kid’s stuff there but he’s too young to care about brands. A13 yo might be a bit fussier so eBay May work better.
He’ll need ski pants, jacket, sun glasses (better than goggles in spring), ski socks x6 (I like a fresh pair every day, wearing dirty socks is horrible), a couple of base layers and maybe a mid layer like a fleece in case it snows. He should get a helmet with his board and boots. He will need very high factor sunblock, 2-3 small tubes or sticks so he can’t take them out with him.

I wear thermal top and tights
gloves from Level which have inbuilt wrist protection.

if you have a decathlon shop anywhere near you they do good/cheap stuff.

The best thing I had was a fleece neck gaiter. Kept me nice and snug.

I think it’s a style rather than function thing.

So they should be interchangeable from a functional point of view.

I don’t think you need to worry about padded shorts! I never did when I learned. Yes you fall a lot at the beginning but it’s easy to pick up!

I think the trousers are just baggier because that's the 'style'. My DP is really into snowboarding and I was having a bit of a rant about the half pipe competitions during the winter Olympics that the riders would probably be better if they wore lycra rather than huge coats and baggy trousers. He said it was the 'look' and I didn't understand

Any way, have you looked on ebay? There's often numpties like me who have bought things new for snowboarding/skiing, realised we were rubbish, then sold the stuff on.

They are interchangeable but the looser fit allows for more flexibility in position. You tend to get more wear on bum and knees with snowboarding, waterproof or reinforced fabric there is a must!

I find snowboarding ones baggier which is much easier if like me you have to wear padded shorts as otherwise the falls end up causing horrendous bum pain 🙈
