Query on Window size

I normally have my laptop set up with a second screen plugged in, so my desktop is 1280x768 (laptop screen) and 1024x768 (second screen)

I know many people have smaller screens but even the 1024 pixel wide screen shows a horizontal bar because the MN page appears to require the full width (ie not allowing space for the vertical scroll bar).

Is this just a quirk of Google Chrome or by design ? Not sure if all users can have the option of even 1024 pixels wide (must check my G3 iMac, which admittedly is dated, but one of the intentions of web page design was not to 'restrict' users to needing particular browsers or screen resolution... maybe Mumsnet just decided to ignore that option).

Have just made a Chrome window of the same size ( 1024 x 768 ) instead of the larger ( 1280 x 1024 ) size and yes, that's the same. I guess everyone in the office is using a wider screen width, and presumably lots of users have wide screen laptops (now that laptops are probably more popular than desktops and 16 x 9 (ie wide screen) more popular than 4 x 3 ratio.

Anyway here's a screen image (with window at 1024 x 768 )

Sorry, was a mistake to hit post - I was trying to check whether different versions of Chrome were causing me the problem. .55 shows a horizontal scroll bar while .99 doesn't

On double checking, the .99 is on a different PC where the screen resolution is 1280x 1024 but that one doesn't get the horizontal scroll bar. I have to update the first PC and reboot it (but in the middle of processing a DB of 250,000 items so not going to disturb it yet!)
