I've just been through this. Basically, they need to be in top sets in the first place. Tutoring is also very helpful, it's definately worth getting a tutor. Pass papers are good too, although we found that simply having the time to do them as well as the increased amount of homework that they get when they go into year 6 can be tricky.

P.S. forgot to mention - the exams vary depending on what area you are in. Some are easier to pass than others, and the format varies quite widely from place to place. Check out your specific area on the website I mentioned and post a query in the forum if you like. There are plenty of people who have already been through the process who will be able to provide advice.

Look at www.elevenplusexams.co.uk - should tell you all you need to know!

You probably need to find a tutor who specialises in getting kids through the 11+ and get them to do an assessment. I would say most of us instinctively know whether our kids are up to it or not. Another thing you could do is do some past papers.
