Glenthorne (Sutton) anyone?

DD has passed the 'Arts' (drama) qualifying test for Glenthorne BUT not at all sure how this will help her gain a place? She loved it so we've put it first on our CAF but we don't really understand how the system works -she still also has to sit a 'banding test' in November?

How has passing the Arts exam helped her? At some schools it seems that the 'specialist' places are guaranteed if qualifying tests have been positive but cannot think that likely for Glenthorne, as none of their 'blurb' suggests as much.

Just to say that we do not live in their usual 'catchment' area so 99.9% sure she won't get a place that way.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi,
my DS will be sitting for the banding test for Glenthorne. I can not find from anywhere about the pattern of the test. Is it multiple choice, GL pattern or any other format.

Any help would be much appreciated.

DeepS

@Uchk. Thank you so much, appreciated. So in this case, anything could be expected at the workshops. She is sitting the academic banding tests on November 24th, so hopefully they will determine whether we are successful at the school's admission next year...

@MarLil... No format just an exercise in groups and then graded. If your child is very confident then they could get high scores but have in mind they pass 'ALOT' of children

Hi Everyone,
my DD is doing the drama and dance assessment for GlenthorneSecondary on 13/10 and we have no idea what to expect? Does anyone know what the format of the assessments are? Thank you. xxx

Uchk not very high I don't think. I only know of one person (outside the area) who got in and that was on appeal. DD was still really low on the waiting list a term into the last academic year, so we took her off it.

Hello all, March has come and gone just curious if anyone here got into Glenthorne. did any get in via the art workshop or distance? I found out Glenthorne has quite a number of waiting lists on criteria and some children fall into 3 or more of these waiting lists, distance, workshop, banding, and Worcester Park. What are really the chances on waiting lists living way outside? Anyone with experience?

SunnyS76 - think Glenthorne definitely has the best reputation for results of all the comps in Sutton borough - I guess why it so hard to get into unless one is very, very local and/or has super amazing performing arts talents!

That is not to say, however, that Carshalton Girls isn't gaining in popularity and results with the passage of time.

Good luck and hope you get your CAF submitted soon.

Ok, I’ve asked around, people who have Children in Sutton and around the area, and given their opinion Glenthorne is judged as the better school. I hope this coming from actual yr11 and yr12 kids is an honest opinion. I was afraid that Glenthorne might be a bit overrated and living of previous glory, but they seem to think that still better choice then Carshalton girls. I am not interested at amazing academic achievement, I just want a school in which my DD will be safe and able to fit in and be treated as a person. 6 days to CAF deadline...

Which one did you and your DD really like best?

FWIW I've read something recently to suggest that Carshalton High is considering going into a consortium with Nonsuch and Wallington Girls - if it does I would imagine it's star will very much be in the ascendant (well it already is but probably more so even).

Thanks for clarifying all that @tiggytape ! It’s all too confusing and stressful. My DD and husband think that we should put Glenthorne first as she’s scored 48, but I always imagined her going to Carshalton High as she did well on sports aptitude test( or so she thinks as we only got a pass and no ranking/score). So don’t know what to do. I keep asking people’s opinions of which is better School to suit a sporty dance loving girl, who is good at maths but not loving English so much, and can’t get a firm preference yet. Or maybe I managed to brainwash myself to dislike Glenthorne as I knew that chance of getting a place is very slim? Wish I can spend a day as a fly on the wall in each school....

Problem is that you have no way of knowing how many children got each mark. Such stats might help one identify the probability of getting a performing arts place.

DD got high 30s and when we last checked her waiting list place (we are out of borough) she was 99th (and that was in late June)! However, I wonder whether DC who do more than one discipline test and score relatively highly across all three are automatically likely to be at the top of waiting list, over those who've only entered and passed for one?

But then they probably know that usually not everyone that takes the test will put Glenthorne first choice. - agree with the theory of this but the reality would suggest that they really don't have to go 200+ (or even 100+) down the passing entrants' list to fill their places. What is the point of passing so many? And I think it's unfair that children are allowed to potentially do all three disciplines. Surely it should be a lvel playing field. So all DC applicants entered for one or all three regardless? No place for 'latent talent' identification either - suspect all places go to children who have been doing their discipline(s) for years in a taught setting.

@Uchk , I agree, they shouldn’t pass so many. But then they probably know that usually not everyone that takes the test will put Glenthorne first choice. Regarding your top 5, it doesn’t ruin your chances. You should put the schools in right order of preference. Because if someone scored one point below your son and they put Glenthorne first you still have a priority getting in Glenthorne before them; BUT if you had put Glenthorne 6th and you get into any of your other schools of your choices, then you’ll never know if you got in Glenthorne or not. I already know of 3 kids from my DDs school who scored 48. But we would not know if all 237 scored below or over... From what I read on Mums.net the info is very contradicting- some posts say lowest offer last few years was 47, but others say 41. I suppose it could have been 47 on first of March, but by June it got to 41 maybe. Good luck to your sonSmile.

@sunnyS76 got a letter too and my son passed for both drama and dance unfortunately with so many passing it I don't see him having a chance as one of his classmate scored 46 which was higher than his. He would be doing the banding test but Glenthorne will be our sixth option in the CAF as I do not want to waste top 5. Glenthorne will not be a realistic top choice with so many kids passing and living out of catchment area. If he had scored 49 or 50 then it definitely will be first on our list.

Did you get your letters lovely mums and dads? So they passed even more this year in Glenthorne! I’m happy with my DD’s marks but no guarantees how many the other passes scored. 😐

Hi all,
We’re in the same boat, waiting for results following my DC’s aptitude test in Glenthorne last Saturday. She’s convinced she did very well in one of the categories but also said that there were some very very talented children in the drama and music workshops. The fact that they pass so many is very discouraging as without ranking “pass” doesn’t mean anything really (unless your DC has scored 49 or 50 points of course). But at least they give out scores. My DC applied for another school as well and from there we were only given a pass, but no score or number of children applying/passing. The waiting and not knowing is quite stressful I’d say....

jshovelt if memory serves me correctly we got a letter. Have a feeling it was not that far ahead of CAF submission deadline that we received it (so possibly this time-ish last year?). DW was chivvying to submit the form so it held us up having to wait on the outcome result of the drama test.

For all that Glenthorne is higly thought of/sought after, we weren't overly impressed by their communication or the fact that they passed so many DC for the 'arts' places.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Resurrecting last year's thread since it's the only info I can find on the subject. My daughter has just taken this year's performing arts test at Glenthorne High School. Does anyone know when and how the results will come out? Will it be an email? When can we expect it? I am fairly anxious because the deadline for secondary school applications is at the end of this month. Many thanks.

Our DD didn't get a place but we've given up on Glenthorne now. Obviously it wasn't meant to be. She's happy with the school she's got and I do believe it's worked out for the best (for her).

Good luck to your DS Ledgebaby Wink.

We got through thankfully so my DS will be going to Glenthorne. We would be interested in learning whether or not there are any other kids from Wimbledon going.

And we're very proud that DD did so well (comparatively) in the test despite never having had an extra-curricular drama lesson in her life.

We didn't get it for DD despite it being her top choice. However, think we're 99% convinced we're not going to hold out for a place anyway, TBQH.
