what can ds do in post-GCSE summer holidays?

Apart from Playstation, of course Grin

The holidays are long after GCSEs and before sixth form. Dh has no possibility of taking leave so we are not going on holiday.

Ds cannot do a job (if there were any round here) as he is not 16 until the end of August. Likewise volunteering - his work experience placement was keen to have him back but is not allowed to do so until he is 16.

So... any suggestions? Ds is supremely unsporty so any kind of sports camp would be his idea of Room 101.

Have you thought about www.superweeks.co.uk/ate-training-what-it-is-and-how-it-works/ ? I tried to persuade my dc to go to these but never managed.

My DS is an August birthday, but he started a job in that May, on reduced hours, but once "on holiday" the restriction on hours was lifted so he earned quite a bit.

Our libraries take volunteers to help with the summer reading challenge from age 14.

Sue Ryder shops will also accept 14 - 16 year olds.

To add an update to this thread - pinkcheese recommended a company called diverbo who do english immersion camps in Spain. As a result of this post, my son applied to be a volunteer. He has arrived back home today after 2 weeks in one of their camps - he has had a fantastic time and made friends from Ireland, Scotland, America and Canada as well as Spain. He loved every moment of it and is determind to return next year. He will be joined by his 14 year old brother , who can't wait to go now! Diverbo were fantastic, arrangements were done efficently and the cost was relatively low (it cost about £150, which was the flight and 2 nights in a hotel). It was a great experience for my son.

I've just seen "my" thread burst back into life!

Interesting, petrova, perhaps ds can do something like that next year.

Actually, ds has really been enjoying his leisure time since GCSEs, and in fact he has been volunteering at his work experience place who made an exception on age for him.

Is he thinking about a STEM/ engineering career?
If so, I would recommend having a look at Smallpeice trust: they run engineering courses for students in y8-y12.
