Relationships

I've met someone and want to ask him out

I've recently met someone who has really taken me by surprise. I've been single for around 3 years now, apart from a short relationship, and I'd had very little interest in men for a long time until I met him.

He's good looking but what got me by surprise is his personality, he's very smiley and has a great sense of humour. He makes me laugh and is a genuinely nice person. I haven't met someone who's even caught my eye for a long, long time so it's a little bit exciting! Smile

The problem however, is that he's a teacher at my university. Not my teacher, but I have contact with him occasionally.
We are a similar age (I'm a slightly older student) and I will be leaving in 2 months so would wait until then.

I have no idea if he is interested in me too, but I can't believe I've had my head turned after so long of being adamant I was going to be happily alone forever so I feel it would be foolish to just ignore it.

My idea was to give him a 'thank you' card/gift as I am leaving (for helping with my work, I'll be giving them to two other members of staff) and put my number inside. I thought this would be good so he can choose to take it or leave it, as it's potentially a little bit inappropriate?
If he isn't interested he can simply ignore it to spare me the embarrassment of asking to his face! Although, I've known several teachers to get together with students once they've left so I suppose it isn't that radical of an idea.

Best case scenario: We go on a date, fall in love, get married, have children and tour the country with our family band.

Worst case scenario: He never contacts me and life goes on.

It's worth a try surely? Grin

I'll come over Sweeney, just already have tuped a few messages that I don't want to copy.
This ooh he sounds very attractive. I usually go for fair haired men, nd I do like good shoulders - but guess what, this man is not of that type! He's dark bt his eyes - just swoon! He's def not a 'hunk' but I'm drawn to him like by some mad magnet. Of course it's not by far just about appearance. I like to think I know his soul a little.

Fair point PGtips, there are 50 messages left! My parents always taught me to scrape out a jam jar before starting a new one!

Bloody hell, your man sounds to die for, PGtips! Truly. A disarming paradox of strong and gentle.

I'm going all giddy again.

I always go for dark haired, slender men, and yes, I've been guilty of falling for slightly shorter ones too.

Benoit is the absolute opposite of my future ex-husband. He's very masculine and strong looking but somehow light on his feet and very agile. And, he's fairer haired than my average guy.

I mean I couldn't be with a bossy man, but I do wonder if he is deep-down quite dominant (which would scare me off). I'd like to find out though.

is B dark, a typical good looking French type - or different? nice that he's tall. My fancy man is not tall - so instead of thinking he may be uncomfortable, it's me who feels I'd like to be shorter. We are ok unless I wear heels. I don't know what it is but I fancy non-tall me more often than tall ones. I also don't go for macho types. Not surprising probably as I do behave like a man myself sometimes, i.e. no problem with asking someone out (though ok not face to face, and usually with pretext), and I like softer men. I can't quite figure out this man though - outwardly he is quite soft/sensitive/nice-looking but he has strong views and is a very confident talker.

so funny re the red dress sounding gross! It's a full on colour no doubt! but cream spots add a softe touch AND go with your hair colour - so spot on (haha)

Valium should do it, LovePGtips! We can do this.

Shit, I'm scared.

I never wear red usually. I'm more of a cream, black, charcoal grey and muted colours. But this red dress screamed out to me, as red dresses do, I guess.

This is going to sound a little gross but it's a blood red with cream spots. Trust me, it's lovely.

yes, I don't have a red dress. I have a bright red blouse but I can bring myself to wear it. I do have demure shades of dark red present in my (wintery) knitwear and my fave bag is dark red. Is you dress a bright shade This?
Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm touched!
Yes Prof and This we should be brave. How to steady the nerves though- any advice? yo know, cope with silly grinning etc?

I stand to lose a bloody good car mechanic. I bet there is no better in the entire region! Grin My hairdresser male friend (who doesn't drive) thought that was a ridiculous excuse.

You, my dear Prof will not fail but in the most unlikely event at least you won't be passing him in corridors again.

I'll probably ask B out, he'll say no and then my car will break down. Grin

Ooh I never answered you This, I currently don't own a red dress! How miserable is that. I have plenty of beautiful dresses though, but maybe red dresses should be our theme Grin .

I agree that all three of us (and anyone else lurking who may be in a similar situation!) need to be brave and go for it. What have any of us really go to lose? We potentially have a lot to gain!
Worst case scenario it doesn't end well and we all come on here and have a good mope about it Smile

We are all excited now Sweeney is around! Smile

Do you think the "you only come here to see me" type comments have some weight to them Sweeney? I was discussing this with a friend and she agreed that she'd never say that unless she was interested in someone, and we said we wouldn't even say it to a close friend so felt it must be flirtatious!

Ah, PGtips, I thought that would get you a little rattled! You have been a rock in my angst ridden world and I am so hugely grateful to you.

Please, go talk to your man. You need to do it.

We should all make a pact to go be brave. And report back to headquarters once we've done the deed.

LovePGtipsMonkey · 03/06/2016 22:59

Prof the thread is watched and people are following simply because your situation is SO likely to end well! you have all the chanbces there, and people love a romantic story.
This also has a good chance for a fling once she follows her red dress strategy (and our 'he's waiting for you to ask' cries!)
But Prof's could just be a classic.

Sorry, Sweeney. Sounds like a perfect in my opinion. That's how I'd like it in the future: meeting in the middle.

Prof....I think you both want the same thing but both are shy...what I would do is get your friend involved ..the one who knows him...and get them to state to him how obvious he is you are around and the same for you when he is around...and of course...without your knowledge as far as he is concerned wink wink

You are making me feel so happy Sweeney. Goodness, what a star you are. And please say hello to your wife!

My eldest daughter is amazing. She is twenty, stunning and hugely bright. Her father, at least, gave her some very special genes. I'm grateful that his absence has not prevented her from becoming a passionate and hardworking young woman.

OK, I think your advice has nailed it for me. I must pluck up the courage!

Perhaps you could come along with me Sweeney? Would your wife loan you out for a couple of days? There are direct flights to Tours and the garage is about six minutes drive away.

And then, we could go sort out PGtips and Prof together!
