1930's original tile flooring

We moved into our house last year , it's a 1930's house and is carpeted throughout, very modern. After visiting a few neighbours I noticed they all had beautiful, original tiled halls I decided to have a look tonight and with the help of my trusty screwdriver I can see beautiful red tiles underneath the carpet! What do I do now? I want to show the tiles but I have barely any disposable income and don't know if i could take up the carpet and get the tiles cleaned myself, any advice?

Last picture from me, but it's finally completely finished and I treated myself to a lovely runner. And yes, the cat has got in the picture again 😸

We think it could be about 140 years old, so Victorian.

@Benfoldslanded

That looks beautiful OP. I've just pulled up my hallway carpet and found mosaic tiles. They need a good clean and there are some tiles missing by doorways.

That’s a beautiful and unusual floor - I’ve never seen a floor like that before. How old is your house?

Wow these are amazing finds. To me it would feel like winning the lottery.

For those saying you only have floorboards, imo even they are good finds. I have cement 😕

I'm so jealous of these amazing floors, we lifted the carpets in our Victorian house with anticipation but only found nasty 60s Lino on floorboards under the carpet.
To be honest it's worked out ok as we've had to add access hatches to rewire and insulate under the floor and that's easier with just boards.
We are now saving up for parquet to replace the carpet.

@morenachos

Reposting - previous post had my insta name on so is now deleted.

We had a lovely surprise when we lifted the beige carpet in the hall of our Victorian terrace after moving in.

They were quite grubby being over 100 years old but we had them polished and sealed.

I think they came up lovely!

They are outstandingly beautiful!

Sorry just to add - what I did was send them a picture of my floor and the tile measurements and they were super helpful in advising me which of their range would be the best match, how many I'd need and I got some samples to test before finalising my order.

@Benfoldslanded

How to sort out the entrance to the doorways though? They all look like this!

I had a similar issue in a previous house.

There are specialist companies that produce replica tiles.

They are based on traditional designs/colours and I found tiles to match those missing.

What I did do was replace just replace single tiles that were missing but in big sections like your picture I replaced the whole section of that bit of the pattern iyswim ie I sort of squared it off.

At first they stood out out as bit because they were obviously newer but a years wear and and you couldn't tell the old from the new.

Just google Victorian tiles and you'll see a lot of companies who make them.

Also it can be worth checking reclamation yards (making online enquiries with a picture of your floor) to see if they have anything.

Wow! Love some of these finds. I was only saying yesterday that I wondered if we might have such tiling. Our house is a 1901 terrace. Upstairs is all stripped oak flooring, but downstairs has laminate that the previous owners did 12 years ago. Not so easy to check as carpet! But I figured that because they kept the oak upstairs, there can’t be anything nice downstairs or they wouldn’t have covered it in laminate, surely?!
