Has this EA taken me for a ride?

Currently trying to buy a house which is turning out to be very difficult! Saw a house we liked and put in an offer £30k below asking but in cash. The EA and vendor told us that they had another offer on the property but that the buyers had not sold their house yet and were dragging their feet so were continuing to market it. When we put our offer in the EA took 5 days to come back to us and replied saying 'I'm pleased to inform you that the vendor has accepted your offer, please provide proof of funds, the names of the buyer and your solicitors details'. So far, so good and cue lots of hours lost imagining living there. We didn't hear anything for two weeks despite the EA saying that our proof of funds was fine so just assumed things were going slowly, however called the EA on friday who said 'the vendors are coming in to the office on monday to look at the two offers and make a decision'. At this point i said to the EA that i was confused as he had sent an email that sounded like our offer had been accepted? He replied that the vendor has to offer to accept as many offers as he likes. Is this a thing?????? We had a message today, not even a phone call to say that the vendors had gone with the other party as they had offered more money and were not in a hurry to move unlike us, which is totally contrary to what we told him. We also had given an offer that we were prepared to negotiate on however we were never given a chance. Just want to know if this is a normal situation as i'm feeling very pissed off and cant decide if the EA is just a huge incompetent, i'm being unreasonable or he was just using us to manipulate the other buyers in to moving things along.
