honed and filled travertine tile - good for cloakroom?

Builder has suggested that travertine tile might not be sturdy enough to stand up to the wear and tear of back hall and bootroom [ all one room with 4 kids stuff].I have already ordered 57 metres for kitchen and utility- do i order more and seal well, [ and expect some damage],or am i best going for the better-wearing ceramic or porcelain copies.Has anyone experience of honed and filled travertine tiles?.

Not sure what damage your builder is expecting??
Is he expecting heavy things to 'crack' it or the regular foot-traffic to scuff it?
It is stone, seal it well and you will be fine.

We have just laid travertine (honed and filled) in both our kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen has a back door which we use to get in and out of the garden, muddy walks etc.
Once dh left a heavy crowbar on top of the washing machine in the kitchen and during the spin cycle it was vibrated off the machine and clanged onto the floor with an almighty crash. Not a mark on the floor.

Go for it, I think you will be fine

It is really soft and very porous but seal it well (and be prepared to keep sealing it) and like behindlock says - it should be fine.

We have got this in our kitchen, utility and dining room (looks gorgeous). It has only be for a couple of months so I can't comment on longevity. The tile co. suggested that in high wear areas I resealed it annually to keep it looking good.

Ours has been down for 4 months now and I love it. Obviously in 4 months it has not had much foot - traffic yet but the crowbar incident made me feel much happier about having it.
I had not thought about sealing it regularly (had naively thought once it was done that was it) but it can't hurt to do it once a year can it?

Yes i think he's expecting lots of wear and tear and kids coming in with gravel on their feet.I am mighty reassured by your crowbar incident BehindLock...though.Tbw i think my kids would trash whatever we put down.I will note down that we need to seal every year!.Thanks to everyone for feedback.
