Mmmm. Did the whole class get this list? Maybe the teacher, this early in the term, is assessing who can spell which of the common words (tho would have thought this info would have been passed on from Year1.) If your child can spell all these, just keep any eye that they get harder ones in time. It's only the first week or so back.

Btw, my DS has just started Year 3 and has never brought a spelling list home in his lfe, so think yourself lucky!!

I hope so costagirl dc is free reading (although teacher doesn't believe it!) and has had this list every year since starting school I'm just really shocked that they feel it is a worthwhile activity

Perhaps she photocopied the wrong list?
I did that once, but the words were too hard for the class. Lots of stressed out children and annoyed parents.

I'm not quite sure what you think is wrong with the list?

That does seem easy for year 2 - DS has just started year 1 and would get all of them right except was which he thinks is wos. He is probably at the higher end of the class but not outstanding.

Or it could be that she is hoping to start the year with a confidence boosting ten out of ten for everyone.

Exactly HC, and what would be wrong with that? They are only small, my dd for example who is also in Year 2 has only just turned 6 - in many countries she wouldn't even be at school yet!

Ds wouldn't have a clue with most of those.

Great.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it!
It is a good idea

Actually I was wrong, he got 9/10 - just tried it on him

So was the tricky one.

I wonder if DS's Y2 teacher was being optimistic last year, he was being sent home with sheets with words like 'adventurous' 'miscellaneous' and 'sympathetic'. I was a bit

I think it's good that they start off on the basics, best to get high usage words learned properly, isn't it?

lol Tidey I so agree
and at your wrong list HC

Emkana I think it is too simple we have had the same list for 3 years now they just don't seem to move on. I do agree with formal education too young etc etc but since overall levels in the UK are so poor (30% GCSE remember from Ed's thread there seems no progress or culture of achievement)

I accept the 10/10 confidence thing but what if they get them wrong

I bet that was a nice surprise HBC if I tried them on my dc at this time of night there would be lots of running around the room screaming and flapping and saying you horrible Mummy

In fact horrible Mummy seems to have been the theme of the week since going back to school

DS2 (just gone into yR1) just got 9/10 (got was wrong).

They are reception high frequency words the teacher is testing to see they know last years words before beginning Y1 words. (not a good use of time IMHO)

mrz - this was given to a clas that's just gone into YR2

Report
mrz · 11/09/2009 20:21

even bigger waste of time then

I am a year 2 teacher, and this week I have been testing the children in class on the high frequency words. I then send home an individual list of 5 words for each child, based on those words which they could not spell during the initial assessment. This will continue until they have learnt all of the HF words. No child will have the same list.

I told him it was a game

(and he believed me...)

Report
1dilemma · 11/09/2009 21:14

oh just to clarify this was a typed list with the rest of the homework on it.
I would be surprised if it was done individually although cutting and pasting is an option

dc is a dab hand with the mouse I will ask if the teachers got the kids to cut and paste their own list

We had HF words but they were

Could
Would
Should
What
Where
When
Were

there were more but I can't remember, the wine isn't helping

Ds1 has already learnt these last year, I think they are making sure everyone can spell the basics.
