should my ds read the next ORT level during the holidays?

My ds is startibng Y1 in september and we were given the ORT book for the stage he is to start in Y1as a gift from a relative. do you think i should get him to read it during the holiday or just wait till he's given in school. I'm not sure if the teacher'll just move on to the next stage, or make him read them all over again.

we get books from the library and all but i thought since we have the ORT as a gift we might as well use it.

It's all to do with the complexity of vocab as far as I can see. It's probably explained in the literacy coordinator's book bands handbook. Wher's Feenie when you need her?

I will definitely encourage my Dcs to read this summer, evend ds3 who just finished reception but not ORT as he positively hates the thing fot some reason! They all prefer books of their choice from the library.

see if your library does the "reading challenge"(this year is called Quest seekers. the children have to read a few bookd during the holiday, they get stickers and other goodies when visiting the library and get a medal and certificate when finished

quest seekers

Purple is supposed to be Y2 level, according to this ORT chart: www0.oup.com/ort/pdf/tree/treechart.pdf

I actually find this hard to believe, as purple seems so easy compared to the Y2 SATs papers for Level 2, which require written answers.

That didn't work, I'll try again.

ooo I like the tree, wouldnt like to look too closely with a hangover!

It says Purple is age 6 to 7.

It seems to me to be quite a flexible system tho, I was having a rumage in the Purple box and several seemed quite easy, easier than the previous box. Maybe they put in some confidence boosters?

In my dd's case reading is far ahead of writing, I would think it will take a fair while for her to have them both at the same standard, probably by the time she gets to SATs.

I am glad they have matched up all these different schemes. Its quite daunting really.

I am a teacher and have access to the ORT and may other reading scheme books. I brought tons of them home during the holidays between reception and the start of year one and it was never a problem whenhey went back to school.

I do however think that reading schemes are not the be all and end all and so I always did the library challenge with them and they read lots of other books (both fiction and non-fiction)which I think helped just as much. Reading scheme books are all well and good but exposure to a wide vocabulary is also very important.

Each of the book banding levels indicates text characteristics

orange working towards level 2 NC
stories are longer 250-300 words
increased space allocated to print rather than picture
illustrations support overall meaning of text
more literacy language used
sentence structure more complex
non fiction texts contain more formal sentences and a widening range of unfamiliar terms

purple working towards level 2 NC
sentence structure become longer and more complex
story plot may be more involved and reflect the feelings of the writer
wider variety of text genre but still illustrated
some books with chapters for more sustained reading
widening vocabulary and range of terminology
non fiction texts cover an increasing curriculum range and different text formats

Thanks mrz

It seems there are a lot of quite simple books in our Purple box. I wonder if they are there to boost confidence, or they have got in a muddle.

Are they purple banded or purple covers? some of the ORT books have a lilac cover but are really pink level just to confuse everyone

For the holidays we have
Jack - Ginn Rhymes 1
A Day in London - ORT Magpies 8
Max Makes breakfast - ORT More Robins 6

There is a huge difference between the first two books! Its very odd. DD is a little dissapointed but not overly worried as she is very keen on the Quest at the library. I also am not worried, more bemused by it all!

o, also they all have a school sticker that is clearly purple, so the school intends them to go in the box, I think.. lol

My DS has just finished Y3. He has moved from lime tape to a brownish colour, possibly called conker?

When I went into his classroom I saw on the wall was a literacy target to be on ruby tape. When I have googled the ORT stages, they don't seem to go beyond lime. It appears that his school must do a very long reading scheme. Can anyone tell me what are the stages after lime?

Thanks

Thankyou Mrz. I can't get hold of anything now we are in the holidays.

I would guess it's the school's own system.

You're probably right about that Toptip. I was just curious as when looking at other threads most children become free readers after white or lime tape. I think from what my DS has said they have quite a few more tapes after lime and I wondered where 'ruby' tape is if this is their class target.

I'm not concerned about DSs reading though, he is on ORT 14 and achieved a 3c in his SATS which I think is about average.
