should my ds read the next ORT level during the holidays?

My ds is startibng Y1 in september and we were given the ORT book for the stage he is to start in Y1as a gift from a relative. do you think i should get him to read it during the holiday or just wait till he's given in school. I'm not sure if the teacher'll just move on to the next stage, or make him read them all over again.

we get books from the library and all but i thought since we have the ORT as a gift we might as well use it.

Thanks for the ideas. He loves stories, and adores being read to. In fact he didn't start reading until I promised he would still get a bed time story when he learned to read. I promised clearly three times over the February half term, and when he went back to school he started reading!

I am planning to go over the phonics again with him, and the key words.

You won't be surprised to know we have lots of the books you've mentioned so I'll get them all out. But not the Grinch who stole Christmas (hate the story) or the one about the racist things on the beach (too hard for aging mothers).

Mrz thanks that's really useful. Is gold the next colour, what is if not? Could you give me the real book list for it? Many many thanks!!!!!!!

Somebody ought to do the real book lists for all the colours would be really useful for everybody over the holidays. I'm out of teaching now so no idea otherwise I'd do it.

Thanks again

thanks a lot everyone for the contributions. well, i decided to leave out the ORT except he picks it up on his own and just read other books. he likes the ORTs though, but lately he's been reading tv character books like spongebob, spiderman etc,so i guess we'll just get him those.

hulababy, its ORT level 8, which i think is the purple level.

Many thanks for the Purple list! We have Hairy Maclary, Winnie and Wild Things all ready.

So does it go Purple, then Gold, then White? I think I remember Silver tho, where is that? I feel like I need to go back to school!

We had pink a then pink b then (cant remember the order) red yellow green and blue, and possibly brown too. Orange and until Friday Turquois, now Purple. They are for all of KS1 I think.

Maybe i have imagined Silver, or maybe it was white? Will check it out tomorrow and report back!

T hink these carry on into KS2 in some schools. They aren't specific to KS1.

sorry to appear really thick but what level would go with ORT stage 5 - my DS is just about reading stage 5 (Magic Key I think?) and I would like to get him some books to read over summer?

Report
eruditie · 20/07/2009 08:50

ORT stage 5 could be either blue or green. The newer ORT books often have the colour band in a little blob on the back.

So, what I thought was silver was actually a pale gold. So no, no Silver level. I couldnt see Brown either so I think I might need to start paying more attention! At our school we have ORT Level 8 Magpies spread over several colour bands, including Turquois and Purple. They have mostly other reading schemes with a few ORT mixed in for variety.

If this link works, it shows the ORT books listed in the colour bands.

Thats really interesting, I was wondering why our school had the same level ORT over three colour bands, and its on the list. I wonder why?

Report
TwoHot · 20/07/2009 12:46

Also, on the list it says National Curriculum 2C for Purple, does that mean Year 2?
