Ds will be starting school in Sept, the school uses read write inc, I am thinking about getting some magnets for home is there a difference between the different 'types of systems or will any phonic letters do the job?

I agree posters are decorative and great to support a child's interest.
Like lots of things beware there are some poor versions out there avoid a is for acorn and o is for oak etc

Justnow, I think it's so great your ds started showing interests.
What we did is we just followed his interest and provided him with resources as much as we can.
When he loved puzzles, we bought lots of them. Magnetic letters, lego, train set, wooden blocks, etc., we bought huge quantity from charity shops so he never runs out of letters when he wanted to make words/sentences, or pieces when building something with legos, or wanted to build complex train system.
Also recommend watching tv/videos with subtitles.
My other personal recommendations are abacus(good for place value, general arithmatic), teaching/talking clock, and electronic dictionary.(Maybe when he is bit older for this.)
