Y6 Level 6 Reading - did anyone get it??

Got SATS results today including the actual marks. Once again none of the three Great Hopes at my daughter's (Ofsted outstanding) school got the Level 6 Reading. What a daft test!

Anyone know any child who got it?

I think this is the last year for all this, isn't it??

We have to wait till Friday. My DD sat the test, but I think it is unlikely she will attain a L6. If she does I'll let you know!

Nobody got it at my son's school. Four were put in for it, including him. They were told that only one child in the county got it!

There is a lot of chatter on the other thread about how SATS mean nothing but I'm really proud of DD and grateful to her teachers for all the effort they've put in. Seems a bit churlish to say it doesn't matter.

We don't know the numbers yet, nor who got it, but according to the school figures around 4% got the level 6 reading.

They're going to be thrilled with the maths results though as about 1/5 got level 6 and no one got lower than a level 4. Which is interesting because the tests were meant to be harder this year, I thought.

Well done to those who got it - amazing!

DD and three others sat it. She was doing well in practice tests, but said on the day that the test (a passage from Treasure Island) seemed a lot harder than the past papers. I thought then that she probably wouldn't get it. We got her actual scores: 16/50, which is quite a way off!! Pass mark is 24.

I'm dying to know what the other 3 at her school got, and I know that if I sit tight I will eventually get to know on the grapevine - though how reliable an 11 year old's word is is debatable!

My boy got L6 in Maths, SPAG and writing but missed out on the reading, but we weren't really expecting him to get it!

Another question. Does anyone know of any boys who got L6 reading?

I don't know anyone in RL who got it. They didn't put any kids in for it at dds' school, though they did in everything else - I don't think there's a lot of faith in the L6 Reading test, among teachers, as its so hard to pass.

Yes, it will all change next year, though many schools will keep the levels until and unless they can come up with a better way of measuring progress.

My DS got level 6 in Maths (49/50 ) and SPAG but didn't get Reading (got L 5A) and he didn't do writing.
2 boys in his class got L6 reading and 1 got L6 writing.

People whose kids passed the level 6: would you describe them as real bookworms anyway? Or is it more that they've had a lot of practice at reading comprehension?
Just keen to know who they are!

Definitely a bookworm and a very bookish family so she has read a lot. She's also been exposed to film classics (Jane Eyre, Far from the Madding Crowd, Animal Farm etc).

She loves word puzzles and does crosswords voluntarily. She's great at scrabble, boggle etc and a whizz at verbal reasoning.

I suspect what made the difference though is the fact that she went through 11+ for independent and grammar schools. She has, therefore, been exposed to lots of comprehension this year and is unfazed by exams.

Apparently only about 2 in this county get level 6 reading. DS1 didn't get level 6 (he did the test).

Can I ask, the children who have got the level 6, what did they get for KS1 SATS? A friend's daughter has just got level 4 for KS1 reading and I am curious as to how that would translate.

There isn't a 4 for Key Stage 1... Unless they informally gave her a ks2 test. Not to my knowledge anyway.

National pass rate for L6 reading is just above 0% every year.

It is an insanely hard paper, harder than I would give my Year 7s. What the agenda is behind encouraging children to do this then setting them up for disappointment is beyond me. Well done to those who got it but if your child didn't, remember it is being used to measure schools and will make no difference to the secondary schools anyway.

Not trying to put a dampener on anyone's success, honest, but I hate the thought of all those 11 year olds thinking they're not good enough this week.

Not sure yet, dd got lvl 6 for writing, she was borderline when the inspectors came in so she had to write another piece, it was about pokemon apparently . Doubt she will get reading, although according to her report she is a truly gifted writer blimey.

I have told her being truly gifted, she needs to write a best selling novel and keep me in luxury, sadly hasn't come to pass grr.

Debbie Fiderer - I am a Y2 teacher and no child can get a level 4 in the tasks that all Y2 children sit. The most is a straight level 3 - no sub levels for tasks; straight pass or fail. Although many equate a level 3 to mean a '3B' which is a secure level 3.
It is highly unusual for any 7 year old to be graded as level 4 -the average for an 11 year old. The school would have to prove several times over that the child's work demonstrates a 'level 4ness'. This means several examples of writing at level 4, reading tests to show consistency of level 4 attainment and the same with maths.
The likelihood is: a) Your friend is lying. b) Your friend misunderstood the teachers and that the child is PROJECTED to get the equivalent of a level 4 in Y6.
I cannot stress enough how much of an exaggeration or a 'little white lie' this would be. There is a possibility that the child sat some Y4/5 optional SAT papers which can give a level 4. But that doesn't mean the child IS working at level 4. We don't give levels based upon 1 piece of work! Also, in my 15 years experience of teaching across both key stages, level 4 is VERY different in Y4 optional SATs as well as Y5 and Y6 past papers!!!

Level 4 has consistently been referred to as an attainable grade at Year 2 in every single KS1 ARA since they began publishing them several years ago. It is, however, quite rare and in some LEAs requires LEA moderation to attain. It is not impossible though. I've known 3 or 4 over the last 15 years or so.

I didn't hear it from my friend, I was there when the teacher told her. This is a child who is truly exceptional at reading (got level 3 for maths and writing though), I have known her since nursery days and she taught herself to read at age 3, has been reading fluently since before starting reception. I don't know how they assessed it, but I am sure that they would have been able to prove it. If anything they have tended to under report her levels in past, presumably because of the need to show good progress later on. Anyway, I wasn't looking for comments on whether or not a child could get level 4, but just on whether those who are getting level 6 at KS2 where also getting level 4 at KS 1, but I guess the answer is no.
