Reception teachers: - Home visits - are they essential?

Just that really.

What are they FOR?

DD had a home visit for nursery which seemed fairly pointless though kind of nice to meet the teachers (but I would have met them the following week anyway - surely)

It's just that if dd isn't going to start school for a whole other week, I'd quite like to go away instead of wait at home the whole week for a 5 minute visit iyswim.

Oh that's a point. Our address has changed since application date.

Never lied though, but school will need to be informed.

What kind of nursery sits children in particular places? Do they have desks?

DS's reception class have particular places for carpet time which I think is registrations, phonics, show and tell and end of the day story. It is a patterned carpet with shapes on and they know their shape. A sits right at the front as she has bad eyesight, B sits in a particular spot where his hearing aids work well and near his 1 to 1 TA and friends are not seated next to each other so they don't chat.

Probably stops the I was sitting there/I want to sit next to X arguments too. They spend the rest of the day walking around different activitois

I do home visits as a childminder and so does the local nursery school
I find that children settle much quicker having seen me in their own territory, where they feel safe and relaxed, and being welcomed by their parents.
