Level of VR/NVR required for 11+ entry to selective schools

Thinking of applying to London selective schools for DS1 as he seems to be very bright and a bit of an allrounder (bar PE and art). He is 8 and in Y4 at an inner city state primary school. Would be looking to score highly as would require a bursary top up as we cannot afford the fees or a tutor. As he likes non verbal reasoning we have done some at home already. He currently scores around 95% in the time suggested (30 min) for the Bond 11+ non verbal reasoning and similar in the verbal reasoning although he does not enjoy that as much. Maths papers are harder as he has not covered many of the topics at school yet and English I can't help him with - will have to rely on the school for that. He is on the G&T for literacy and numeracy.

I was wondering what level schools expect them to be at (I have heard one year ahead of age for the practice books)? What percentage are they expected to get right? Is he of a calibre to apply for bursaries at Emmanuel 10+ or even colet court deferred 11+ or other selective schools? We are thinking of this because we do not feel that he would be ready for a state secondary at 11 as he is the youngest in his year, small, a bit of a geek and we live in inner city London.

Don't know what is expected, only that he is becoming an expert coaster and finds it hard to pay attention at school when not given challenging work (possible ADD/ADHD btw). He is too lazy to ask for more work (his school tends to give more work rather than harder work).

95% on 11+ at age 8 does sound exceptional - yes, he should be in with a good chance. Or try grammars?

Bread - Thank you, that is encouraging. Do you know what age we should be practising and what percentage DS will be required to achieve if he sits exams next year (Y5)?

The closest grammars appear to be in Wallington (Croydon) or Kingston unless I have missed something?? Both are about an hour away as there is no straight forward route.

Tantrums - We are looking at at Central London and south/south west London.

By the time he sits the 11+ he should be working on the age 11-12 books quite competently (I would say 80% but a lot of schools set their own papers) A lot of books say 11+ on the front but then have an actual age guide as well , so check that.

ALso don't just use the Bond books - some of the other nonVR books have very different types of questions so have a look at those too ( sorry, can't remember the publisher but they are in WHSmith)

You mention that he will sit exams in Yr 5, but he will actually sit in the November - January of his YR 6. However Yr 5 is the critical year for making sure the foundations are solid. Good luck.

Better - thank you very much. I said Y5 as, e.g. colet court (if he is good enough), has a Y5 assessment for children from maintained schools for deferred entry into Y7. So at that age he should be doing 11+ (10-11) getting around 80% right? And in Y6 the 11-12 books, also getting 80% right.

Is this the same for English and Maths as well?

What level would be required for bursaries? I assume scholarship level backed up by a bursary but what level is that?

Bursaries are all means tested - I'm guessing the household income requirements and fee support varies from school to school. You'll have to just ask them.
