Low Amniotic fluid

I went for a 4d scan today and was told he couldnt get any pics as i didnt have enough Amniotic fluid and it was on the low side.
He advised me to drink much more than i usually do.

Im really worried now that ive been harming my baby by not drinking enough.

I have a midwife appointment on Thursday so will chat with her then about it but just wondered if anyone else has had experiences of Low amniotic fluid and what happened?

You should see your midwife about this. She'll send you for frequent scans so they can measure the amount of fluid around the baby. It can (although might not be) a sign of the placenta not working as it should be so they will measure the baby. I have seen this in mothers that smoke, it does normally rectify itself.

I sopke to the guy who did the scan (private 4d scan) and asked him to confirm what he meant about the low fluid levels.

He said that yes they were too low for the scan to work properly and yes they were slightly on the low side normally but not dangerously low.

Im quite relieved as was fearing the worse but will chat to the midwife about it on Thursday when i go.
Im drinking loads of water as per the sonographers recommendation and taking things easy at work.

Im sure if the midwife thinks things need checking she will send me for a scan or/and tests.

If i hadnt had the scan i wouldnt have even known they were on the low side!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Did you phone?

You need to contact your midwife - I'm assuming this was a private sexing scan? They are useless when it comes to giving proper advice.

maybe he was new and inexperienced and could not do the scan and he told you this to cover it up??

actually, i agree with pixie, call someone tonight and get some reassurance

I would phone the midwives or the maternity ward tonight to get some assurance. You'll be worrying yourself sick if you wait till your appointment, and they'll probably tell you its nothing to worry about and youll feel much better then. Its perfectly normal to phone the ward to speak to the midwifes in a frenzy about something, so they wont think any less of you! I had low levels of amniotic fluid with my ds, but I was 38 weeks and he hadnt grown for 4 weeks so they just induced me.

The guy was really quiet and shy and it seemed nervous to say anything but anxious for us to leave if you know what i mean.

Nothing was said at my NHS 22 week scan but ive read it can change quite quickly.

Im 28 weeks now.

did he diagnose you with anything? or jsut say low fluid? how many weeks are you? was anything said at your 20 weeks scan? drinking more can help, but try not to panic. i would call your MW tomorrow or monday to ask to be seen sooner

No idea but bumping for you. Surely the person scanning should have been able to tell you if it was a problem or not?

I must admit that I'm guilty of forgetting to drink much but I didn't with ds either.

Hope someone comes along soon who can put your mind at rest.
