Wrong sex?

I had a scan due to some complications, being 13+6. The scan picture was sitting on the table and the consultant in the morning was standing near to my bed/table and saw the scan photo from the previous evening and said 'oh a boy, baby is okay when they scan yes?'...i was speechless as we were keeping the gender surprise....I didn't know what to say, so when the junior doctor came back in i explained i was a bit upset, she tried to say he may be mistaken. Any thoughts on this? Is it likely a consultant could tell that easily standing about a metre away from the photo? Could he still be wrong?

@sel2223 I’m a midwife working in early pregnancy. I’ve examined many many many fetus’s the genitals are there they just can’t be seen on ultrasound yet.

Here’s an actual scientific research study on sex development in the womb.

@sel2223 That link you’ve posted also clearly says boys and girls look the same VIA ULTRASOUND. I’m not disputing that.

Thanks for the comments folks. Feeling bit reassured that the surprise isn't completely gone. He made the statement as of "ah a little boy congratulations' type statement. It wasn't a case of saying he by accident! Thanks for your help @overwork. I'm sorry for your loss @Tiffany67 x

@LesbianMummies thank you. I find it really interesting so will have a read.
As I said, I'm not a medical professional so was only going on what I've read/been told and happy to stand corrected.

Doesn't sound like this changes anything for the OP though if not visible on ultrasound so hopefully that provides her with some reassurance 🙂

@sel2223 No it doesn’t, there’s no way he could tell the sex from that ultrasound photo. At that gestation it would take a very experienced sonographer to even hazard a guess never mind determine sex 100%.

When I was pregnant with Ds 11 years ago I had a private screening scan at 13 weeks as my local hospital wouldn’t give me the usual 12 week scan.

Anyway throughout the scan I was referring to the baby as she, the sonographer said “are you wanting a girl?” To which I replied I’d be delighted with either. The sonographer said “we’ll that a good job because I’m 90% certain it’s a boy!”

I was quite taken a back because I wasn’t even sure if we were going to find out the sex and certainly didn’t expect to be told at 13 weeks. When I asked him how he could tell he said it was the angle of the pelvis Hmm ( I now know a lot about nub theory so I don’t know if this is what he meant?)

When I told the next sonographer this at the normal 20 week scan she was very Hmm but sure enough he was a boy.

However I will add that the sonographer at my 13 week scan was scanning me for at least 40 minutes and I certainly don’t think anyone could tell with any certainty from a quick glance at a scan photo especially with no clear nub shot. I’d take it with a pinch of salt OP.

At my 20 week scan, quite a few years ago, we had made it clear that we didn’t want to know the sex. As the sonographer was finishing, she asked if ‘he (meaning the baby) would be playing for our football team’ (Dh was wearing a football shirt). I asked if she meant baby was a boy and she back tracked and said no, that wasn’t what she meant. Dc is a girl. We will never know if she made a mistake or was just making conversation.

I had my scan at 12+5 and knew it was a boy clear as day
