It's fine if it doesn't make you sick. The smell of bacon is a common trigger for morning sickness.

Bacon is my one really strong craving. If I get even a whif of cooking bacon I have to eat it.

Well that and lemons (eating those like oranges at the moment...)

I go by the NHS websites advice. As such, I start everyday with peanut butter on toast. It's pointless to avoid food that has no warnings.

My Mid-wife and doctor were both most adamant that peanuts should be avoided.

They were wrong and us ignorers were right though. Midwives and drs give out bad advice as well sometimes.

I feel sometimes like there's this psychological thing where pregnant women are almost encouraged to fixate on "banned foods" in early pregnancy - as though it's not really about the foods, but about managing anxiety, and restricting diet is a way of making your intangible worries into something real you can control? Dunno, just a bit of armchair psychology.

I have been reading loads about all the banned foods (just because I'm interested!) and most of the guidelines are at heart about precautions and hygeine. The NHS guidelines are more than conservative, so I wouldn't worry about anything that isn't on their "avoid list", and try and have some perspective about some of the things that are!

For example, avoiding dodgy buffets, service station sandwiches and food out of kebab vans will be more important in terms of avoiding listeria than freaking out about a bit of pasteurised supermarket brie shrinkwrapped to within an inch of its life.

Also some of the advice is about giving a really simple public health message rather than accuracy. Like liver! They just say avoid all liver, but 100g chicken liver (which is an admittedly small portion) is about 5000 international units of vitamin A, and the safe limit for pregnant women is 10,000! So I don't see how a small amount of chicken liver is going to do any harm from time to time, but I guess it's easier to say "avoid liver" than have people eating calves liver by mistake because they thought it was chicken liver?

No one I know took any notice of the peanut thing. I don't thinks it's a coincidence that intolerances and allergies have risen in line with these stupid guidelines.

The peanut thing certainly wasn't ignored by anyone I knew. My Mid-wife and doctor were both most adamant that peanuts should be avoided.

I've gone off bacon, sausage and most meat. Used to love them before :-(

It doesn't change all the time. Occasionally updates due to new evidence. The peanut thing was always dubious and rightly ignored by most.

Proper sensible advice has been the same for decades. No pate, no soft cheese (although thats dubious too), wash stuff more and careful of raw and undercooked stuff. Thats about all you need.

I couldn't eat a bacon sarnie when I was pregnant with DS1 - the smell seriously set off my morning sickness. Almost 4 years later and I still can't cope with the smell of fry ups cooking

Whaaa urethra it does change! It wasn't that long ago was it that pregnant women were told to keep away from peanuts! Now I can eat peanut butter my heart's content (thank goodness). Also guidelines vary from country to country.
Starting a thread each time you're worried IS a bit pointless though when the NHS guidelines are pretty easy to google.

Funny how you are so much more relaxed 2nd time. I remember having a nervous breakdown last time about having inadvertently eaten a bit of brie. I was convinced I was going to give birth to a two headed beast lol. Fortunately I didn't. Not even read any guidelines this time and not entirely sure what I'm meant to be avoiding apart from certain cheeses Hmm

Advice does not change all the time. People talk shit all the time, and always have done, thats not the same thing.
If you're going to ask here everytime you want to eat something its going to be a looong nine months.

BeautifulBatman · 05/08/2015 14:43

Apart from liver, I've eaten anything I want. Peanuts, soft eggs, blue cheese, rare steak, shellfish, cured meats etc.

Someone told me I couldn't eat prawns. I think people forget advice changes all the time!

I stopped buying and eating the cured bacon because I didn't cook it, just used to use it in sandwiches and on salads. Normal bacon - of course, yummy!

Fuck me I panicked for a moment when I read this!

Wtf do people get this information. Someone told me the other day I shouldn't be eating smoked salmon , which is not the Nhs advice. I ignored them.

I'm going half mad for some Brie, pate and salami. Life without bacon would be the final straw!
