Pregnant with PCOS

I am 9+6 with my first after a diagnosis of PCOS some time ago. I've had an early scan at 8 weeks and everything looked fine but I can't stop worrying about the extra complications and risks that come with having PCOS e.g. increased risk of miscarriage/pre-eclampsia/gestational diabetes etc especially as it took us so long to get here. I am a healthy weight, BMI of 23, and I exercise regularly and generally eat really well (although last few weeks all I can eat is carbs without wanting to be sick!) Has anyone else been through this and can put my mind at ease or give me any advice to stop me worrying so much?

Hi there!
Diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago, currently 25+4 weeks after conceiving with Clomid. MW mentioned that having PCOS puts me at slightly higher risk of developing GD, so have bloods taken at every appt. Meanwhile, (fingers x'd!) glucose has been fine. But other than that the pregnancy is at no higher risk than anyone else.

So just enjoy your pregnancy and try not to worry!

I'm just surprised nobody else is having regular bloodwork to monitor blood sugar levels. Assumed that was standard procedure :)

Hiya, I've also got pcos and it hasn't been mentioned as an issue at all! My bmi is 26 so a bit higher than you and it still hasn't worried them and I'm classed as low risk.

Everyone has to do the glucose test in my area at 28wks so even that isn't any different for me.

Enjoy your pregnancy!

Thank you so much all for replying and for putting my mind at ease! Feel like I can breathe a little bit now!! it's good to hear from others who have PCOS and clomid-aided pregnancies and to hear you have had no complications. My 12-week scan is the week beginning June 1st, so not too long to wait!

TwinkleTee - that is great to hear you are classed as low-risk! I just assumed i would be high risk because of PCOS.

Thanks again all, do feel reassured now and can try and enjoy being pregnant rather than panicking all the time!!

Me too!

Diagnosed with PCOS 15 years ago, I'm now 34. We struggled with conception (thank god for Clomid!) but have had absolutely no further complications with this pregnancy. I'm 39 weeks and about to pop, I hope!
Although I have had an absolutely rubbish diet full of carbs and ice cream my GTT came back normal and apart from ridiculous 24hr nausea (hence the carb overload) at the beginning, my pregnancy has been a breeze.

Having PCOS just slightly increases your relative risk of these negative outcomes compared to non-PCOS people. It by no means guarantees these things will happen.

I'm classed as low-risk and plan to birth in the local MLU.... Good luck with your pregnancy! Flowers

I'm the same, PCOS diagnosed years ago. As I have a normal BMI my midwife has barely acknowledged it. Almost to the point where I've been irritated. But, aside from a threatened miscarriage at 5 weeks (nothing to do with PCOS) and baby being breech the pregnancy has been very smooth.

The fact that everything was fine at the early scan is a good sign so please try and be reassured by that. I have quite severe PCOS and needed IVF to get pregnant but had the easiest and complication free pregnancy ever. From what I've read it doesn't seem proven that PCOS increases the risk of miscarriage. As for GD I suspect this largely happens to those withthe syndrome who have weight problems which doesn't apply to you. So please try to relax and enjoy the pregnancy. And congratulations!

Honestly you don't need to worry. So many ladies have it, I haven't actually seen anyone on here who has had any issues with their pregnancy that has PCOS. They noted it on my hospital notes but Im no more "high risk" then anyone else :)

You will be fine. Do you have a date for your scan?

I have PCOS and had 4 perfectly healthy pregnancies and births. I had the GTT but it's nothing at all, apart from feeling ravenous not eating in the morning!

Pregnancy is worrying enough and, at this stage, there is very little you can do to change the outcome other than what you are already doing. Eat well, exercise and take care of yourself. Good luck and congratulations!

I wouldn't give it too much thought, PCOS is a very wide term for what it actually is and a lot of complications can develop regardless of if you have it or not.

I was diagnosed with PCOS (one ovary totally cystic) and had complications in pregnancy which were nothing to do with it - I am expecting DC3 now and all cysts have gone.

Honestly, follow advice, but don't worry x

Hi and congratulations!

I'm 29wks with number 2 after being diagnosed with PCOS about 10 yrs ago now and have had no issues due to PCOS with either.
Had the GTT as it seems to be std for PCOS and negative both times, so if you are heathy there should be no greater risks then with anyone else.

It is something that's difficult not to worry about espacially if it's taken a while to get pregnant (4 yrs TTC with my first, eventually with the help of clomid) and a complete natural surprise with number 2, 5 yrs later after not expecting it to happen again!

All the best to both of you x

Thanks Laura, good to hear that all is going well so far for you! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy! Hopefully at my 12 week scan I can get some more reassurance from the midwife!

I'm also pregnant with my first and was diagnosed with PCOS last July.
I too had an early scan at 7 weeks as I dont know about you but I was experiencing some quite bad cramping pains in my ovaries. I was actually told that your ovaries shut down during pregnancy so that I had no more chance of having a miscarriage then anyone else!

I'm now 22 weeks tomorrow and have had a very healthy pregnancy so far. You will have to go for a GTT at 26 weeks but it's no drama :)
