Do I have to wash all baby clothes

Every thing is brand new do I have to wash it all or is it ok for baby to wear. First baby I'm clueless lol

I washed everything (new and secondhand) for DS1 and will for next child (due in April) too. My reason was slightly different though - I had it in my head that the baby would know our family's 'smell' (you know how every household smells different?!) from in utero and would therefore find it familiar if his clothes smelled the same as ours Probably daft I know but my kids my way!

I have washed everything in the first size and 0-3 (in case he's a big boy!), and when he starts growing out of that I'll wash the next size up in advance.
I don't know why anyone would put their newborn baby in something unclean; not only is it exciting to wash their tiny things and sort their drawers out (I think), it's the most sensible thing to do!

I have got clothes up to 12month but only washed and fully detagged 0-3month clothes and bedding. And that was only so they smell fresh and clean. Haven't bothered with special washing powder or conditioner though just used less in baby washes. Baby is going to be touched by clothes on other people that haven't been washed in non-bio and sensitive products so better that there skin gets used to it from the start. All my family have done the same and never had any problems.

Deffo wash. Your first baby, I don't know why you wouldn't, I don't mean that horribly, and I am a lazy person, but you really should wash newborns clothes.

Silly question but if you use non bio washing powder, what temperature do you need to wash it at? I normally use bio washing powder and wash pretty much everything at 40oC.

I washed all baby clothes as I think, but don't quote me, I got told they use a lot of starch in them to make them look good, unsure if it is true but baby's skin is so delicate that's it's best to wash things first :0)

Formaldehyde can cause skin conditions as well as being a known carcinogenic

The risks are minimal but why bother for the sake of 10 minutes sorting laundry?

I didn't but I was so scared of jinxing things being too prepared incase something went wrong. I then spent most of 1st day of ds life thinking I should have! But again we only had very basic stuff as didn't know sex and again I was terrified after years of wanting baby and of infertility and a number of miscarriages that something would still stop me getting my v longed for baby if I thought it was too real.

I didn't, and poor dd ended up red raw with eczema. I wash everything and double rinse now.

For newborns, yes.
It is also a really nice, nesting sort of thing to see all those teeny vests etc! (Well for me anyway!)

Don't do as I did and took all the labels off the 0-3 months summer dresses, washed them and then had a tiny baby who didn't fit 0-3 until October when it was too cold

yes but i wouldnt wear clothes myself without washing. prefer smell of persil to factory/stockroom/lorry/other people that have touched things. yuch!

Wash the very basic minimum of clothes. If your baby arrives and is much bigger or smaller than you thought, once the tags have been removed and the clothes washed you can't take them back to exchange them if you need to.

So I would wash half a dozen sleepsuits and bodysuits and what baby will be wearing home, and then when baby arrives, get willing family/friends to wash the stuff you need.

OTT IMO I didn't & ds survived with no ill effects. I also took baby whites back in favour of proper little boy outfits :)

No. Life is too short to wash clean clothes. Shortly after they're born you will be debating how much sick is too much and if you can leave them in it anyway; you don't need to wash them before that!

I didn't with my two but maybe if you've got a family history of allergies it might be a good idea. Always wash second hand things though!

Ok I'll be washing all mine then, with non bio is it. Just don't wan to wash stuff then they don't fit baby so can't refund. :)

surely it's completely your own choice? I love putting on new clothes before the first wash. A friend once told me how unhygienic and nasty this is, but I just thought she was over the top. I honestly don't believe a baby would catch anything or be harmed by brand new clothes. I'm just rewashing the second hand ones that have been stored for a while and smell a bit musty

I washed, and am still washing, all DD's new clothes now at 16 months. Just re remove any chemicals or shop 'dirt'. Am interested to hear from fellow 'washers' at what age you stopped. It still feels like the right thing to do -DD likes to lick her clothes--...

Mmolly there are a huge amount of chemicals on packaged clothing to stop it creasing, fading and to keep it soft.
