No I got it on prescription so you may have to go and see your gp. They really are awful aren't they? I've seen a consultant and am getting booked in for some very painful surgery to try and sort the problem once and for all.

They're back....

Did you get the hydrocortisone cream over the counter or is there a specific brand name I should ask for etc?

Sad it hurts soooo much

Having tried literally everything in the last week (yes included grated potato!!) hydrocortisone is the ONLY thing that has stopped me crying 90% of the day!

Get something on prescription and, err, pop them back in if you can. Glamorous eh? Starting to recall the mw commenting on them popping out as ds2 was making his exit. Yeuw!

Meso: er yes, ahem ahem. At least I know now I'm not alone and will mention it.

I remember when I was pg with ds2 I cried on a friend one day saying that after pushing this baby out my piles would be down to my KNEES. The only upside of him being a large transverse baby and the resulting c section, was that he didn't make my piles any worse.

No, it's my c section flap that is heading for my knees....

Been back to the GP as I was in agony last night and apparently I have thrombosed piles. Basically internal ones which have come down and been strangled by the rectum meaning they have clotted. Dr Google tells me it's the most painful type of piles you can get Hmm and I certainly agree! GP prescribed me hydrocortisone which has helped plus lots of warm salt baths and basically said I need to be horizontal as much as possible (great with a 3 year old!) All this and I've still got to push the baby out!!

I developed one external pile in my first pregnancy.... So embarrassed, felt like I had a burning itching grape hanging out my bottom... I went to the doctors and gave me anasol cream and suppositories and lactulose to soften stools.

After having my son, it was still there, when I actually got round to looking at it was pretty tiny, and soon stopped Bothering me at all (although I don't like the idea my hubby might see it when we have sex). It basically dried up and left a little skin tag. I got my gp to refer me on after having had my son to see a consultant, as I was aware it might flare up again and we were plan ing on having another. Consultant helpfully told me the scaring would be worse than the skin tag so did nothing. I think if it had been bigger or internal they would have done something about it.

Well true to form I am pregnant and my pile is playing up! I smother it in anasol every morning and night and use suppositories as soon as it starts to itch. Fingers crossed I don't get any more, my one is enough!

Flibberty - what is the other thing bothering you? I have also got hideous left over from Pregnancy piles and was wondering if it was to do with - ahem- cleanliness?

Am also dying of shame and wondering if its for the same reason?

I just phoned the doc and have an appt (cos its low priority) on 20th Feb.

Thanks ladies!

I would def go back to your GP and get a referral to a specialist. They are a lot more help than a GP and will do a proper examination to tell you if they're internal or external and 1st-4th degree etc. They will then let you know your options, of which there are a few (all of which sound pretty hideous but I guess we have to think long term). Don't let your GP fob you off!

I have had them since ds1 was born 8 years ago. They just appeared after I gave birth.

Sometimes they don't bother me for ages but I had norovirus over xmas with 3 days of terrible runs (can't spell diahreahahahahhahah) and have been bleeding if I walk more than half a mile, itching.

Is it normal to feel like there is something being pushed up your bum when you sit down, or coming out when you bend over? Is this what people mean when they say they have to push them back in?

There is something else bothering me about them but I would die of shame if I mention it and no-one else has the same thing.

I did mention them to the doc when ds1 was about 6 months old, he said 'are they internal or external' and I said I didn't know. He didn't examine me, just said to get some anusol and so I've never bothered a doc about them since as he made me feel like it wasn't important.

After 8 years do I need to go and get them done??? Looks like I've got them for life doesn't it Sad

Funnily enough the potato didn't work. Sudocream is next on the list!

Sudocrem worked a treat on mine, far better than Anusol and Germaloid cream! And lots of dried fruit to ease the pooing process!! Grin

The thing is though.... My poo is more runny than solid...... Not diarrhoea runny but softer than normal and has been all pregnancy, but I still seem to be straining. Wierd. Going to call doctors today.

I was about to say Anusol but sounds like you need something more. Maybe a GP can advise what's best during pregnancy. Certainly sounds like Lactulose would be a good idea, iron tablets make everything a bit solid don't they?

Cheese I just wanted to try to make you feel a little better....I have had piles for most of my adult life and they got significantly worse after having DD1. I have been told I need surgery as they are now a permanent fixture but can't have it until I'm finished having children. I'm 38 weeks pregnant and they are now so bad I can hardly even walk. Been awake the last hour googling wacky home remedies. Clearly the pain is sending me loopy as I have just gone downstairs, grated a potato and put it in my pants. And I'm not even joking Shock. I've drawn the line at actually inserting a garlic clove up there (honestly google it!!) Piles are a comedy issue for some but crippling for others so you have my utmost sympathy!

CheeseAndMushroomToastie · 30/01/2013 23:05

Anusol isn't working.... The normal one..... Or do you have to get through three tubes before it makes a difference. Am now on iron tablets 3x a day too so am I just doomed in the poo department?

Piles suck. I developed them a couple of weeks ago in parallel with a non-pg related thang. My god, I nearly fainted a couple of times on the loo the pain was so bad. I was literally crying out, then would despair thinking 'how will I ever cope with childbirth if I can't handle a tiny bit of poo?!'

I tried lactulose. Very low dose. Made things a little uncomfortable in that I couldn't put off going if ya know what I mean. I also took to pushing them back in/massaging them after the fact. Not sure which worked but the combo did it and now back to normal. Still a bit stingy but I can handle this.

WIll definitely be investing in some harder core stuff for next time though. Best of luck all.

I ended up at the GP's with this yeaterday. She wanted to have a check there were not any pretruding. Came away with a prescription for Anusol and some Lactulose. Along with my thrush cream, SPD and iron tablets I feel as if my body is just giving up!

There's another thread somewhere about this which I found a few weeks ago at just the right time - someone recommended Nelson's Haemorrhoid (sp?) cream, which I found in Holland and Barrett. It's the only thing I've used (and I have a cupboard full of different creams now!) that actually takes the pain away. After using it very regularly for a week or two they practically disappeared but then I stopped I using it and have run out till I can get to the shops again tomorrow! Definitely go to the GP for something stronger after the birth though (that's what I'm planning to do).

Get the normal Anusol, works a treat if anything pile-related could be considered "treat".

I nearly cried over my piles when they first popped out (during pg 2 after a very long walk).
