Too early to be scanned?

Last Sunday I got a bfp. Although I am officially 6 weeks preg I conceived on 9 July so only three weeks sine conception. Had some abdominal pain over the weekend but not period pain and no bleeding. Was scanned this morning and consultant said it was too early and they couldn't see anything.

Although I have terribly achy boobs it's too early fir me to have morning sickness but I'm worried nonetheless.

Is it really too early to see anything on a scan?

It can be for a lot of people. Try not to worry and just wait a couple of weeks. Sorry, that's not massively reassuring but scans where you can't see anything are more anxiety making than no scans IMO.

In short, yes, I think it is too early. I had to wait tilll 13 weeks for my scan, so can relate to the urge to see it NOW. Please try and relax, and do expect a little pain, as your uterus is stretching to make room. Let your doctor know you are pg, and they will refer you to the midwife. The sooner this happens, usually, the sooner you are offered an official scan (I think normally after 8 weeks onwards)

They took a blood test and I have another one on tues so that will probably reveal how things are progressing. I am worried because I poster here early thus week saying I had no morning sickness yet but having read my diary from my last pregnancy, it didn't start until I was seven weeks.

I think its too early, most private places recommend not scanning until 7-8 weeks, any earlier can cause more stress because you can't see anything!

hey hun, i just wanted to share what happend with me (hopefully to make you feel better!) :)

I was getting very very bad pains (not just the period pains you hear about), no bleeding

I went to my doc, (i didnt know i was preg at this point), he said go home, and do a test, if its pos, go straight to a&e in case it is ectopic

So off i went, at the time i was about 5 weeks, i had blood tests ever 2 days to check everything was developing ok, then at week 6 i had a scan (too early to see), so i went back the next week and saw that the pregnancy was devloping in the correct place, then i had another scan about a week and a half later, and we saw the heartbeat :o

The scan also showed the pain i had was due to a cyst that grows over the devolping egg to protect it (it was breaking away as it had done its job, and that is what the pain was), apparently it is very common.

I have just had my 20 week scan and my little boy is perfect :)

Hi.
If you are sure you conceived on July the 9th then you aren't 6wks pregnant, you are 5+2 today.
This would tally with them not seeing anything & saying it was too early.

With my pregnancy last year i was scan 1-2 times a week from when i was 3+5 due to previous very early losses & an ectopic which the hospital continually misses so i think they were scared. Anyway it wasn't until my hcg levels got over 1000 that they managed to see a sac.
I would imagine that they'll be able to see something within the next few days. Although you may need to be closer to 6wks before they see anything.

Good luck x

yep very early to see anything, I had an early scan at 7/8 weeks and saw a lovely heartbeat. Don't worry i'm sure everything will be fine :)

At 3 weeks post conception, you're 5 weeks pregnant. You'd expect to see nothing on a scan at this point.

The cyst Kri5ty describes is called a corpus luteum and I always found it hurts on the side on which it attaches (it's a clever thing, attaches to your ovary/fallopian tube to protect the developing pregnancy and then disappears when it's done its job).

Aches, pains and discomfort are normal in early pregnancy for myriad reasons. But if you feel unwell, the pain intensifies, you bleed or have shoulder tip pain, go straight back to you doctor and ask for further investigation.

And morning sickness happens at different times for different people. Some don't get it at all. It kicked in for me at about 9 days post conception. No rhyme nor reason to it.

That's exactly what I thought. It's far too early to see anything and I'd rather not have gone at all really than just see emptiness. Thanks for all your encouraging posts though - fingers crossed it's all ok.

I was scanned 'too early' for anything to be seen. DD, now 4, is sitting next to me asking for lunch so try not to worry.

Congrats! Yup, def. too early to see anything. I had a scan (thanks to cramping/bleeding) that according to ovualtion/LMP was 7 weeks, only a wee sac and got told I was more like 5wks (and she seemed surprised to have seen anything at all). Next scan put me at 7wks (little heartbeat hiding in a thick stick), next one at what would have been 10wks accordoing to previous 2 put me at 12wks...so frankly, it all seems a bit of a guess early on...I don't think even EPUs normally would scan and only look for anything beyond where the pregnancy actually is (checking for ectopics etc) before about 6-8wks for this very reason.

The abdo pain could just be everything moving about and your ligaments starting to stretch. Though do watch out for UTIs...stinging/warm pee etc...last thing you need is cycstitis....

Quick update - had a second scan yesterday and all is well so far. Couldn't see a heartbeat as yet but my HCG levels are rising and the dreaded morning sickness has arrived (very mild so far).
Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone that posted. It's early days but your comments really helped.
