WTF is a draw? It's a drawer!

We are packing to move house. DH has written 'kitchen draw' on some of the boxes.

Surely this is wrong? It's a drawer.

(this is just one of many irritations this week and I think the stress of the move is taking it's toll on me)

Who is Chester and what does he draw?

I always thought it was a posh English thing to say/write draws instead of drawers [confused forriner emoticon]

I like butterbeerandlemon's definitions of stuff vs miscellaneous.

Spot on.

There are a fair number of "bar stalls" on Ebay too.

Shows that e-bay is populated by a load of ignorant bar stewards then, no?

No, believe me, the quality of furniture in that housing project wasn't even up to Ikea standards....unless "chester" is the polite way of saying "cheap nasty drawers that will fall apart the first time someone uses them/uses them as a weapon/sets fire to them/pushes a stoned mate into them" (it was a rough housing project )

Are you sure chester isn't a posh make of furniture, so draws was the only bit she got wrong?
Of course if she was doing that on "ikea draws" then maybe not!

ND we must know the same people!
I know a Police Officer who wrote 'chester drawers' in a statement!!

When I worked in housing a (degree educated) colleague used to write "chester draws" on every inventory she wrote.

I used to bite my tongue but secretly wanted to scream at her "its a fecking chest of drawers".

Glad my ebay account's been suspended

Also, is stall another word for stool?? There are a fair number of "bar stalls" on Ebay too.

It's fine to say 'draw' but not to write it that way.

That said, my (PhD-educated, usually good at spelling) DP wrote 'and adult' instead of 'an adult' last night. I think he was tired and distracted and perhaps his brain was already at 'adult' when his pen was still at 'an'.

There are generally lots of draws on Ebay.

Fimbo · 16/07/2009 12:08

At last, lots of people on here call them draws, I was beginning to think it was me that was wrong calling them drawers.

I don't mind when it's pronounced that way, but written that way irritates me! I am 32 weeks pg though, so easily irritated

You think pronouncing drawer as draw is bad?

Try asking a Fifer to pronounce mirror.

[scream]

AitchTwoOh · 16/07/2009 11:46

well, correct dialect. ie wrong, but we have to let them away with it.

Report
StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2009 11:44

correct, really?? I have heard people say this and always assumed it was wrong.
Don't mind when DH does this sort of thing though as I can mention it - it's when I have to suffer in silence that it bothers me

Report
AitchTwoOh · 16/07/2009 11:43

i think it might be regional, i'm pretty sure this came up before and a load of brummies said that draw was correct.

The John Lewis wooden advent calendar had "draws" on the box.

"Miscellaneous" is what you label the box when you have thought very deeply about what's in there but can't classify it under any of your other headings.

"Stuff" is what you label the box when it's late and you have lost the will to live and really can't be arsed any more.

Yes very, very annoying. But I think it might be an Americanism - I have a feeling I might have seen it written in US books.

It's when you find yourself writing "Stuff" on the boxes that you need to re-think your approach, IME.
